Formative Assessment (Graded) For Level 1 and Level 2

1. Discuss the impacts of suspended solids on water quality. (4 points)

 Sediments blocks light passing through the water therefore less reach for aquatic plant
life therefore reducing photosynthesis and oxygen production
 Suspended solids also makes the water warmer therefore reducing the total amount of
dissolved oxygen.
 Suspended solids also interfere with drinking water treatments specifically coagulation,
filtration, and disinfection.
2. A water has an alkalinity of 200 mg/L as CaCO3. The Ca+ ion concentration is 160 mg/L, and the
Mg2+ ion concentration is 40.0 mg/L. The pH is 8.1. Find the total, carbonate, and noncarbonate
hardness. (6 points)

3. A chemical analysis of water sample has produced the results presented in the following table.

Compute for the total hardness (TH), Carbonate Hardness (CH), and Noncarbonate Hardness(NCH). (6
points)
