LET US STUDY
Academic Writing – nonfiction and formal written essay
Example:
A map is a drawing of a place. The drawing shows where things are. A
map can show the things in a room such as a classroom. A map can show the
houses, buildings, and streets in a town. A map can show the towns, lakes,
and mountains in a state or country. A map also can show many other things
about the world we live in
Example:
Did you know not all forest fires are bad? Some forest fires actually be
a good thing, because they provide many benefits the forest. In this defense,
this little secret is not very well known. But forest fires might be a good thing
for a forest, because they help clean the forest and nourish the soil. According
to article on page 5, “Forest fires kill harmful insects and bacteria in the soil
allowing for new growth to occur.” This is very helpful because getting rid of
the harmful insects and bacteria allow for new seeds to spread across the
forest floor and create more green foliage.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is protective clothing, helmets, goggles,
or other garments or equipment designed to protect the wearer's body
from injury or infection. The hazards addressed by protective equipment
include physical, electrical, heat, chemicals, biohazards, and airborne
particulate matter. Protective equipment may be worn for jo-
related occupational safety and health purposes, as well as for sports and
other recreational activities. "Protective clothing" is applied to traditional
categories of clothing, and "protective gear" applies to items such as pads,
guards, shields, or masks, and others. PPE suits can be similar in appearance
to a cleanroom suit. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_protective_equipment)

description of places, people,
object, or event
LET US APPRECIATE
While we are under quarantine, we indulge to sorts of reading
materials around us. While reading, we analyze how the author
writes it and what’ s the main reason why he writes it. We should be watchful
in the writings we browse on the internet or scan on books.

Directions: Analyze the academic writing below if it’s descriptive or expository

The Daily Meal spoke to Doctor Robert Murphy, a John P. Phair Professor of Infectious
Diseases at Northwestern Medicine and Executive Director of the Institute for Global Health. He
said that right now, it’s safer to be outside than
4 inside because of air circulation. But even if
you’re following social distancing guidelines, Murphy says you need to wear a mask to minimize
airborne respiratory droplets produced by sneezing, coughing or talking, which is how COVID-19
spreads. Being outside only reduces your risk. It doesn't take it away completely.
“People have told me, ‘I’m 6 feet away and I don’t need to wear the mask,’” Murphy said.
“Everybody outside should be wearing a mask.” That said, wearing a mask is not a substitute for
social distancing. Help flatten the curve by staying at least 6 feet apart at all times. A recent study
confirms that it does slow the spread of coronavirus. (https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/wellness/yes-you-

The single most important piece of advice health experts can give to help
us stay safe from COVID-19 is this one: Wash your hands. “In the final
analysis, it’s the hands. The hands are the connecting piece,” says Elizabeth
Scott, PhD. Scott co-directs the Center for Hygiene and Health in Home and
Community at Simmons University in Boston. “You can’t necessarily control
5
what you touch. You can’t control who else touched it. But you can look after
your own hands,” she says.
Hand-washing -- with soap and water -- is a far more
powerful weapon against germs than many of us
realize. Scott says it works on two fronts: “The first
thing that’s happening is that you’re physically
removing things from your hands. At the same time,
for certain agents, the soap will actually be busting
open that agent, breaking it apart.”

provide them with extra traction and during the winter months their pads
shrink and tighten, which exposes the rim of the hoof enabling them to cut
into the ice and snow
to prevent them from slipping. Their nose features nasal turbinate bones
which increase the surface area within their nostrils. Reindeers are excellent
swimmers and when migrating they will not hesitate to swim across a lake or
river that is in their path. They can also reach speeds of 80 km/hr (50 mph)
if required. (http://www.theanimalfiles.com/mammals/hoofed_mammals/reindeer.html)
