Unit 1 Animals / Oral Test

"Panda Bear”

Well, hello, I'm Leslie Alba, and I'm going to talk to

you about why the panda bear is endangered and
what the world is doing to save it.

First of all, I'm going to tell you a little bit about this
peaceful animal.

The panda bear lives in mountainous and forested

areas of China. It is a plantigrade species (since,
when moving, it rests the entire sole of its hands and feet on the surface)
characterized by a combination of black fur on the ears, face, shoulders and paws,
and white fur on the rest of the body.

The panda bear's diet is based on bamboo. However, they also consume insects,
fish and small mammals.

Unfortunately, this cute animal is endangered. It is estimated that there are just over
1,800 pandas living in the wild, in addition to about 200 in captivity.

The threats to panda bears are:

First, poaching. This cruel practice is one of the biggest threats that endanger the
panda, since the purpose of hunting is to sell the animal to Western zoos and also
to take advantage of their skin to make things like coats, bags, boots, etc.

Second, the destruction of its habitat. Due to overpopulation, China is experiencing

rapid development and this implies the loss of the forests that are home to the panda.
In addition, bamboo forests are also being fragmented, being crossed by roads and
artificial water channels.

The third threat to panda bears is, of course, climate change. This is affecting panda
bears by generating both droughts and extreme temperatures that are difficult for
them to endure. This causes a modification of their habitat that makes it impossible
for them to lead a good lifestyle.

Well, these are the reasons why they are in danger of extinction, but, what is being
done to save them?

Some of the governmental actions that have been carried out to protect the pandas
are:

First, the creation of the Giant Panda National Park, the Chinese government and a
large number of organizations have done their part to prevent their disappearance
since the park covers 70% of the panda's habitat. This includes care and breeding
in various centers and protected areas.

Second, China established the Wildlife Protection Law and the Environmental
Protection Law, prohibiting the poaching of panda bears and punishing this practice
with the death penalty.

Another point is the repopulation of bamboo forests and finally, the awareness and
sensitization of the population regarding the suffering of these animals.

In conclusion, to protect and prevent the extinction of the panda bear, we must carry
out constant work on habitat conservation and avoid hunting, and we should also
implement actions to help reduce climate change.

And to finish my presentation, I would like to share a phrase as a reflection. The

phrase is "Humans have their own justice, they can defend themselves, animals
can't. Let's be their voice".

Thank you for your attention.
