Guide Questions:
1. What are the words/terms you were able to identify in the word puzzle?
2. How do you define these terms?
DEFINITION OF EVENTS
A set of outcomes of an experiment. It is a subset of basic outcomes
from the sample space.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES
EXPERIMENT EVENTS
Tossing a coin • Head will occur
• Tail will occur
Rolling a die • Getting an odd number
• Getting an even number
• Getting a number less than 4
Selecting a card from a deck of cards • Pulling an ACE
• Pulling an Red Card
EXAMPLE 1. Find the union of two events if set A = { 1,2,3,4,6 } and B = { 3,4,5,6,7 }
An element x belongs to the union of the sets A and B if and only if x belongs
to A or x belongs to B or both. This tells us that A U B = {x : x ∈ A or x ∈ B}.
The shaded part of the Venn diagram below illustrates the union of Set A and
Set B.

EXAMPLE 2. How do you determine the union of two events using the given Venn
Diagram at the right?
SOLUTION:
Let, A = { 2,5,7 } and Set B = { 1,2,5,8 }
Then, A U B = { 1,2,5,7,8 }
• Thus, the union of the two events is the collection of all outcomes that belong to
either A or B or to both A and B.

to A or x belongs to B or both.
A U B = {x : x ∈ A or x ∈ B}
✓ The union of events A and B is the collection of all outcomes that are elements
of one or the other of the sets A and B, or of both of them.

Assessment 3.
Directions: Construct a Venn Diagram of the given sets or events below.
Given: The following are group of students with their corresponding sports event.
Lesson 2
UNDERSTAND
Illustrates intersection of events
DEFINITION OF INTERSECTION OF EVENTS
The intersection of events A and B is the set containing those
elements that belong to both A and B.
The intersection of events A and B is denoted by A ∩ B.
EXAMPLE 1. Find the intersection of two events if set A = { 1,2,3,4,6 } and B = { 3,4,5,6,7 }
An element x belongs to the intersection of the sets A and B if and only if x belongs
to A and x belongs to B. This tells us that
A ∩ B = {x : x ∈ A and x ∈ B}
The intersection of sets A and B is shown by the shaded area using the Venn
diagram below.
A B A∩B
A∩B
A intersection B
EXAMPLE 2. How do you determine the intersection of two events using the given Venn
Diagram below?
SOLUTION:
Let,
A = { 1,2,3,4,5 } and Set B = { 1,3,9,12 }
a. Then,
b. A ∩ B = { 1,3 }
c.
• Thus, the intersection of the two events set A and set B is the set that contains all
the elements that are element of both A and B.
SAQ-2: Determine at least 2 real life applications where we utilize Percentile Rank.
