Topic: Quarter 3 Week 6

1. Finds the elapsed time in minutes and

seconds. M4ME- IIIF - 11
2. Estimate the duration of time in minutes.
M4ME - IIIf - 12
3. Solve problem involving elapsed time.
M4ME - IIIg - 13
Review :

Do you still remember your lesson in

converting time.
How many minutes are there in one hour?
How many seconds are there in a minute?
Review :Write TRUE if the minus and
seconds are equal and FALSE if not.

1. 10 minutes = 600 seconds

2. 4 minutes = 250 seconds
3. 360 seconds = 6 minutes
4. 660 seconds = 10 minutes
5. 8 minutes = 480 seconds
INTRODUCTION OF THE LESSON

ELAPSED
TIME
Lesson 1: Find the elapsed time in minutes
and seconds
Arianne started doing her homework at
7:00 p.m. and ended at 8:30 p.m. How
much time did Arianne spend in doing her
homework? To find out the amount of time
spent by Arianne in doing her homework,
we will count the number of hours and
minutes from start to finish.
Introduction to the Lesson
Arianne started doing her homework at
7:00 p.m. and ended at 8:30 p.m. How
much time did Arianne spend in doing her
homework? To find out the amount of time
spent by Arianne in doing her homework,
we will count the number of hours and
minutes from start to finish.
Introduction to the Lesson

The amount of time spent by Arianne in

doing her homework is 1 hour and 30 minutes.
So, 1 hour and 30 minutes is the elapsed time.
Introduction to the Lesson

Subtract the time started from the time it

ended:

Time Ended: 8: 30 PM
Time Started: 7: 00 PM
1:30 – Elapsed Time
Introduction to the Lesson

Let’s have another example!

Time Ended: 8: 30 PM
Time Started: 11: 10 PM
– Elapsed Time
Introduction to the Lesson
Since we cannot subtract 30 minutes
from 10 minutes, we need to regroup the
numbers. We will borrow 1 hour from 11 after
that, 11 hours becomes 10 hours and 10
minutes becomes 70 minutes because
there are 60 minutes in one hour.
Introduction to the Lesson

11:10 10: 70
8: 30

2 : 40
The elapsed time is 2 hours and 40 minutes.
The elapsed time is 2 hours and 40
minutes.

1 hour + 1 hour = 2 hours

2 hours + 30 minutes = 2 hours and 30 minutes
2 hours and 30 minutes + 10 minutes = 2 hours
and 40 minutes
The elapsed time is 2 hours and 40 minutes.
Lesson 2: Estimate the duration of time in
minutes
How do you estimate the duration of
time in minutes?
To help you understand how to estimate
the elapsed time, let us study the following
examples.
Example 1:

Bart walks everyday around the

park. This morning, he started walking
at 6:22 a.m. and ended at 6:54 a.m.
About how long did he walk this
morning?
Lesson 2: Estimate the duration of time in
minutes
● What is asked in the problem?
● Will you compute for the exact time that
Bart spent on walking?
● What will you do then?
● Estimate the amount of time spent by
Bart in walking. How will you do it?
● Round the time in minutes?
Study this!
Estimated elapsed time | Actual elapsed
time
6:50 6 : 54 Therefore: Bart
6:20 6 : 22 walked for about
30 minutes.
0:30 0:32
Lesson 2: Estimate the duration of time in
minutes
To find the estimated elapsed time, round the
minutes in the time ended and time started to
tens.
The time ended at 6:54 becomes 6:50 and
time started at 6:22 becomes 6:20. To find the
elapsed time, just subtract 6:50 and 6:20. Then
we can get the difference, the estimated
elapsed time is 30 minutes.
Example 1:

Melinda is ready to go on the field

trip. The school bus leaves the school
at 7:46 a.m. and it reaches the
museum at 8:12 a.m. About how many
minutes the bus travels from school to
the museum?
Solution:
Estimated elapsed time | Actual elapsed
time
8:12 8:10 7 : 70
7:46 7:50 7 : 50
0:26 0:20
Lesson 2: Estimate the duration of time in
minutes
To find the estimated elapsed time, it is
important to know that 1 hour is equal to
60 minutes, round the minutes in the time
ended and time started to tens.
Lesson 2: Estimate the duration of time in
minutes
The time ended at 8:12 it becomes 8:10, and
started at 7:46 it becomes 7:50. To find the
elapsed time, just subtract 7:50 from 8:10.
Since 10 minutes is smaller than 50 minutes,
borrow 1 hour from 8 hours and add to 10
minutes so 8:10 becomes 7:70. Then we can
get the difference, the estimated elapsed time
is 20 minutes.
Lesson 3: Solve problems involving
elapsed time
Now that you have learned how to find and
estimate the elapsed time, you are now ready
to solve word problems involving elapsed
time. You have learned in your previous
lessons the steps in solving a problem. What
are the steps in solving a problem?
Lesson 3: Solve problems involving
elapsed time
Annie watched an educational TV show
from 2:30 p.m. to 3:40 p.m. How long was the
show?
a. What is asked in the problem?
Time consumed of the educational TV show.
b. What time did the show start?
2 : 30 pm
Lesson 3: Solve problems involving
elapsed time
c. What time did it end?
3 : 40 pm
d. What operation will you use to solve the
problem?
Subtraction
e. What is the number sentence?
3:40 – 2:30 = N
We will subtract the start time from
its end time
3: 40 – 2:30 = N 3 : 40
2 : 30
1:10
The show lasted for 1 hour and 10 minutes.
Activity 1 : Complete the chart

Time started Time ended Elapsed time

6: 15 a.m. 9:00 a.m.
10: 30 a.m. 1: 15 p.m.
2: 18 p.m. 3: 00 p.m.
6: 35 a.m. 9: 15 a.m.
