Primary Properties of Textile Fibers

Presented by: Alzahraa Salama

Primary properties:

1. High Length to Width Ratio:

fiber length must be considerably greater than the diameter
and must be 100 times longer than it is wide This means that the ideal ratio
is 1: 100
fiber shorter than (1.27 cm) are seldom used in yarn manufacturing

2. Tenacity:
tenacity is the term applied to the strength of individual fibers
it is defined by the (ASTM) as " the tensile stress expressed as force per unit
linear density of the unstrained specimen

3. Flexibility:
the property of bending without breaking fiber must be bendable , pliable ,
or flexible in order to form yarns and fabrics that can be creased to able to
move with the body

4. Spinning Quality ) Cohesiveness( :

the ability of fibers to stick together in yarn manufacturing processes

5. Uniformity:
Fiber consistency in length, width, cohesiveness and flexibility
The processed fibers can be controlled during production so that a
relatively high degree of uniformity but natural fibers are not so uniform
because it's difficult to control the various aspects of the environment
