Maintenance Instruction

1 INTRODUCTION

This instruction describes how to install ECB-1 module package in after-market situation, as a KDL16L
or KDL16R drive module is already in use in the elevator.
The ECB-1 module is a cost efficient technical solution for KONE low rise elevators, which enables
feeding braking energy back to the mains supply. When elevator is running in regenerating state, the
ECB-1 module supplies regenerative energy to the one phase line.
The ECB-1 module weighs approximately 7 kg.

2 ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

Hazardous waste material must be taken care of according to the local requirements and KONE
Environment Strategy.

3 SAFETY

For general safety precautions and personal safety, refer to AS-01.03.101, On-site maintenance safety
manual.
Note the following additional safety items related to maintenance work with ECB-1 module:
Prevent the reconnection of the possible emergency power supplies etc.
Check that the drive module is de-energized before starting any work. There must be no voltage (AC or
DC) in the drive module. Check the operation of the multimeter before and after the test.
Each replacement case must be separately assessed for the risks due to site conditions. Replacement
cases must not limit site conditions.

3.1 Safety measures

This section describes how to safely de-energize the AC fuse (F290:1), DC fuse (F290:2) and ECB-1
module (386) before the replacement work. The work order is continuous, so always follow the work
order from the beginning of section 3.1.3 on page 10 (the AC fuse (F290:1) must be de-energized first)
until the destined component is safely de-energized).

WARNING
Inverter drives usually remain energized for about 5 minutes after the power
has been disconnected. DO NOT work on the drive, hoisting motor or braking
resistors until you have verified that this energy has been discharged.

Test equipment must be set to the 1000 VDC range. The test equipment must
be checked before and after the test to ensure that it functions correctly.

3.1.3 De-energizing the AC fuse (F290:1):

1 For MRL elevators: Move the car to suitable working position (see section 7.1).
2 Switch OFF the main switch (220).
3 For elevators equipped with EBD-device: Ensure that EBD-device will not start operation, switch
it OFF if necessary.
4 Disconnect the connector (X1A) of the AC fuse (F290:1) cable near the MAP / ReCab panel.
NOTE! The AC fuse is safely de-energized. Replacement of AC fuse can be started.

3.1.4 De-energizing the DC fuse (F290:2) and ECB-1 module (386):

3 Wait for 5 minutes.

4 Open the landing door and keep it open by using door blocking tool. Go to the car roof.
5 Loosen fixing screw on the bottom of the DC fuse box cover. Remove rest of the fixing screws (3
pcs.). Open the cover and let it hang on the fixing screw.
NOTE! Keep the removed fixing screws safe.
6 Set the multimeter range to 1000 VDC. Check that voltage levels of the units’ intermediate circuits
are at safe level:
Drive module:
• Measure between fuse (P) and ground terminal (PE).
• Measure between fuse (N) and ground terminal (PE).
ECB-1 module:
• Measure between terminal (P’) and ground terminal (PE).
• Measure between terminal (N’) and ground terminal (PE).
The measured voltage is in safe level, if the reading is between -20 ... 20 VDC. Check that the test
equipment is set to VDC range.
NOTE! The DC fuse and ECB-1 module are safely de-energized. Replacement of DC fuse and
ECB-1 module can be started.
