Making of Multiple Unit in diesel locos
When two or more locos are connected electrically as well as
pneumatically and they are operated and controlled by a Single
Loco Pilot only.

Coupling procedure :

1. Before coupling, engine to be cranked individually and adjust the

required amount of air pressure/vacuum on test plate. And conduct the
Ten Test.

2. Couple the locos CBC to CBC.

3. Couple BP/FP pressure pipes , Vacuum hose pipes,MR equalising

pipes, and brake cylinder equalising pipes.

4. Couple the electrical jumper cable.

Working with Locos in MU
Working in MU is same as working on single loco except additional
power.
a. If a train of empty load and the locos are in MU, the rear loco can be
made dead by pressing the engine stop button in rear loco.
b. If wheel slip experienced while on run, It is required to check MU jumper
cable, some times it becomes slack on run.
c. When any trouble arises in "REAR LOCO" only bell rings or buzzer
sounds, as the case may be, in the "Rear unit" and investigates the cause
for the trouble.
d. On every train stop, the Loco pilot should go to the "Rear unit" and check
the following:
Battery charging
Crank Case Exhaust Motor working.
Brass spindle projection and satisfy himself, personally.

>
Working with Locos in MU when Leading Loco
While working in MU if leading loco gets shutdown. In leading loco…
1. Keep ECS in idle in leading loco.
2. Both control stands put “ON “MCB 1 and MCB 2
3. Both control stands put “ON “ GFCO 1 and GFCO 2
4. Both control stands put “OFF” MFPB 1 and MFPB 2.
5. In the lead loco switch off AGFB, FPB, and CCEB on the
control panel. Also switch “off” HLB if not necessary.

For Pure Air Brake Locomotives: No changes is required in

Air brake system .

For Dual Brake locomotives (Vacuum Formation ) :

In Trailing Locomotives
a. MU 2B to keep in lead position
b. Close BC equalizing COC at coupling end of locomotives
c. Close Banking COC of dead leading locomotive. >

Splitting of Multiple Unit into diesel locos
• Before Splitting the MU Locos
Following Change to be done in the Trailing loco

• Keep MU2B in lead position.

• A9 COC opens in the operating control stand and close in non working control
stand.
• Open ¾" COC near short hood control stand.
• Switch ON MFPB, MCB, and GF on both control stands.
• Insert A9, SA9 & reverser handles in working control stand
• Close the angular COCs of BP, FP and MR & brake cylinder equalizing at the
couple end of the pipes to be disconnected and secure the same.
• Un couple the vacuum hose pipes and secure it on the dummy.
• Un couple the MU electrical jumper cable.
• Now detach the loco to work single unit.
Loco in Banking operation

In banking services and extra locomotive is temporarily coupled to the

rear of the train to push. This type of service normally works where
the train not able to negotiate raising gradient.

 Vacuum brake stock: The banking COC of banking loco is to

be kept in closed position available in nose compartment).
 Air brake stock: The 1” COC of BP to be kept in closed
position. This COC is available near short hood control stand
in front of driver seat in WDM2 and in the nose compartment
on WDM3A, WDG3A and WDP1 locos.
 The banking loco should be started first to give a momentum in
the formation and there after the train engine to be accelerated
further. If available, VHF sets to be used for proper
communication between TE driver and banking loco driver
Double Head working
When two locos are connected pneumatically only and operation of individual locos
by respective crew to haul full load.
a. It is not advisable to work a train with Double head operation in view of safety
b. Both leading and trailing locos are manned by respective crew.
c. Both leading and trailing locos have independent working except braking and
release which shall be done by leading loco only.
In the Trailing Loco:
Vacuum stock:
a. Banking COC should be closed
b. On both control stands, A9 COCs should be closed.
Air brake Stock:
1 ” COC should be closed and on both control stands A9 COCs should be closed.
While starting the train, the trailing loco driver shall open the throttle first then it is
carried out by the leading loco driver.
Leading loco crew shall be responsible for observing signal aspects, speed
restrictions and stopping of the train where required.
Procedure of Changing Control Stand in WDG4/WDP4
On WDG4 and WDP4 locos: Unless one control stand made dead the other control stand
cannot be made live
Procedure to be followed to make Working Control Stand into Non-Wkg – Wkg Ctrl /S
a) Ensure the locomotive is standstill by application of independent brakes.
b) Apply Hand Brakes and secure the loco.

PROCEDURE FOR ATTACHING THE LOCO AND CHARGING THE TRAIN
FORMATION

• Step - 1 : Couple the BP & FP hose pipes to that the formation.

• Step - 2 : Open the corresponding FP angle cock to get FP pressure
charged to 6.0 kg/cm2.
• Step - 3 : Keep lead /trail switch in Test position in the working
control stand and open corresponding BP angle cock &
wait for 3 to 5 seconds.
• Step - 4 : Switch over the lead / trail switch to the Lead position
• Step - 5 : Allow BP to charge to 5.2 kg/cm2.

• Note : In case BP & FP angle cocks have been opened

simultaneously, keep Auto brake handle (A9) of working control stand in
emergency position for 60 seconds and then release.
• Again repeat the Steps 1 to 5.
• *** In case air dryer is malfunctioning, switch off the micro switch
of Air Dryer in breakers panel located

one end of the dead loco for quick release of dead loco brakes.

• Note: A slight air blow will be felt at all times of the BC Eq. pipe during
such dead operation. This is normal and does not affect the
development of BC pressure.

• Apply to Auto Brake (A-9) in lead loco brake should apply in dead loco.

• Release Auto Brake (A-9), brake should release in dead loco. If brakes
are not realsed, adjust BP pressure to 5.2 kg/cm2 in lead loco

• Release the hand brake.
