Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers

The Institute of
Electrical and
Electronics
Engineers is the
world’s largest
professional
association advancing innovation and technological
excellence for the benefit of the humanity. The association
have more than 400,000 members from more than 160
countries.

The IEEE is responsible for publishing over 1/3 of the world’s technical literature in
electrical engineering, computer science, & electronics. It is also the leading developer
of the international standards in Telecommunication, Information Technology, and
Power-generating services & products. IEEE ComSoc & IEEE Wie are some of the
societies within the IEEE institution.

Being an IEEE member is so beneficial for it allows the member to network with other
professionals from the field. It also allows the member to access workshops and
technical courses relating to a specific technical skill(s) that the member wants to learn.
The member will also have the privilege to keep up with the technical advancements
through technical magazines & journals. For student members, they can showcase their
skills by participating in students’ competitions & awards and is allowed to access travel
grants to attend worldwide conferences and can be granted with a scholarship.

Students majoring in engineering, computer science, information technology, physical

science & mathematics, education, & law and policy are all welcome to join the said
association.

IEEE has held many competitions every year and one of it is what they called an
IEEEXtreme.
All about IEEEXtreme

What is IEEEXtreme?

IEEEXtreme (often abbreviated as Xtreme) is an annual global hackathon and

competitive programming challenge in which teams of IEEE Student members and
Graduate Student members – advised and proctored by an IEEE member, and often
supported by an IEEE Student Branch – compete in a 24-hour time span against each
other to solve a set of programming problems. This competition is underwritten and
coordinated by IEEE's Membership and Geographic Activities department, and is often
supported by partnering sponsors, like IEEE Computer Society.

History of IEEEXtreme

IEEEXtreme was created in 2006 by Marko Delimar and Ricardo Varela who, at

the time, were with the IEEE Student Activities Committee. IEEEXtreme’s first instance
was held in 2006, having a global participation of 44 teams and 150 contestants. Its
second instance was held in the year 2008 wherein the number of participants tripled.
IEEEXtreme was held every year up until now and was already participated by
thousands of contestants across the globe.

IEEEXtreme 15.0

Since the IEEEXtreme is an annual competition, it has a lot of versions. Though

they just have the same mechanics, there might still be differences in some areas such

as prizes, statistics and winners. So, for this activity, our group’s focus would be on the

IEEEXtreme 15.0 which was held last year (2021).

The competition was created with the hope of attaining these following benefits:

 To provide IEEE Student members and Graduate Student members with

an interesting IEEE activity.

 To give competitors an opportunity to embrace teamwork – an important

skill to develop for career success.

 To increase awareness within IEEE students around IEEE core activities

related to information and technology topics.

IEEEXtreme 15.0 Rules

 The competition will start at 00:00 UTC and ends at 23:59:59 UTC on
the date of the event. If there is a need to adjust the start and/or end
time(s) of the competition, the sponsor reserves the right for it.
 Participants must compete as part of a team. Each team must be
composed of up to 3 IEEE Student or Graduate Student members,
but a team can only include a max of 2 Graduate Student Members.

As the group views and researches in IEEE, we realize that IEEE Quantum is a

global community dedicated to tackling the challenges of quantum computing,

engineering, algorithms, and related technologies. Talking about challenges and how to

solve them, the IEEE organization organizes a competition which is called Hackathon.

Hackathon gives a lot of benefits. As we observed, this event brings computer

programmers and other interested people around the globe together to improve upon or

build a new software program. Being involved in this kind of event is an opportunity to

showcase one’s skills and talents to develop a new project quickly.

In addition, it is also an avenue to test our knowledge in certain areas of the

platform and improve our teamwork skills. Joining this kind of event is not only fun, but it

is also a way to help solve significant problems in the tech industry. It also has big

prizes for the winner and consolation prizes to the non-winning teams. This event is

great for technology enthusiasts and for people who want to find some thrill and fun or

are trying to earn prize money.

Furthermore, hackathons will make us more aware of our capabilities and thus

bolster our confidence, which is highly desirable for students- like us - who tend to

undervalue our skills or achievements more than grown-up men. Smart Management

and Team Dynamics are only some of the characteristics developed in a hackathon.

Hackathons, indeed, gives great lessons in terms of execution and efficiency.

Meanwhile, this two-day, vigorous IEEE Hackathon aims to pick out the best rising

talents in Web3. A person can participate in the Hackathon if he or she studies at a

local or international university between 2021 and 2022. Programming experience is

usually

preferred.

The IEEE hackathon allows participants to exchange information and skills with

numerous industry specialists, which can aid in exploring novel methods, coding

languages, and business tools. Participants learn about new areas of the industry

through hackathons. As a result, it could improve subsequent learning and raise a

programmer's technical awareness. In addition, it is a chance to impart knowledge and

personal experience. Sharing information is a crucial skill that may accelerate one's

professional success.

Through hackathons, participants will have additional opportunities to understand

a more extensive community and to connect with top scholars and professionals who

can help them design their careers. This also heightens the potential to create a strong

network and have a fantastic learning experience exclusive to participants. Students

whose projects made the shortlist will have the opportunity for summer internships in

quantum technology.

Participating in hackathons will improve our software abilities and expand our

network as we meet other teams. Our potential will increase when we participate in

competitions, and we'll improve ourselves by working with others as a team.

Around the world, judges, mentors, and volunteers supported the Hackathon and
the global Quantum Village got together to organize this Hackathon.

The Hackathon is a stage and an opportunity for students, professionals and

experienced personnels to showcase and introduce their ideas, researches and projects

to the world. With the IEEE being the sponsor for the (QSTH 2022), many people from

different countries around the globe have gathered in this year’s Hackathon to

showcase their talents and capabilities. In this event, participants work together and

form collaboration to share their knowledge and ideas. Many projects and researches

are introduced which range in many categories but they all provide a wonderful display

of ideas. The researches and projects that were presented in the Hackathon are very

helpful for us engineering students as it will help us in finding ideas and references for

our own research and thesis. Moreover, the Hackathon event encourages engineers

and professionals to pave the way to more research and development for the

betterment of our society.

Indeed, organizations like IEEE serve as an avenue in showcasing unique skills

and talents from different engineers and professionals around the globe which opens

the way to a more technologically advanced and innovative world, harnessing every

possible way there is in solving problems in the society through consistent and reliable

researches, creating significant project, engineering technologies, and many more.
