FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT: Enumerate your different experiences relative

to the enforcement and application of the International Convention for the
Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL).

As a non-seafarer and working in a manning agency. I don’t have any experience

onboard a ship but I do believed that MARPOL is very important because it ensures that
the marine environment is preserved by the elimination of pollution by all harmful
substances discharged from the ship. Waste and garbage generated onboard ships
which contribute to marine pollution comprise of chiefly plastics, dunnage and packing
material, cleaning material and rags, paper products, food waste, remains of paints,
solvents and chemicals. Proper handling of these waste products is critical to prevent
marine pollution. MARPOL has greatly contributed to a significant decrease in pollution
from international shipping and applies to 99% of the world's merchant tonnage. Other
treaties address anti-fouling systems used on ships, the transfer of alien species by ships'
ballast water and the environmentally sound recycling of ships.
