Assignment Number 7

Instructions: On a yellow paper, answer the following.

Discuss the different theories of love.

1.) Psychodynamic view on love

2.) Color wheel of love
-The color wheel model of love is based from the psychologist John Lee's book, The Colors of
Love, in which he compares styles of love to the color wheel. He suggested that there are three
primary styles of love. The first one is Eros, which means passionate or erotic. This type of love
involves physical and emotional passion, and this represents love for an ideal person. The next
one is Ludus, meaning game. This is viewed as playful and fun but not necessarily serious. It
represents love as a game, and this is for those who are not ready for commitment and are
worried too much about intimacy. The last one is Storge, which means natural affection. This
form of love is familial love, and can be developed out of friendship, where people who share
the same interests gradually develop affection with one another. This represents love as
friendship.

In 1997, Lee expanded the list of love styles. Mania, a combination of Eros and Ludus that
represents obsessive love. Pragma, a combination of Ludus and Storge, representing realistic
and practical love. Then lastly, Agape, a combination of Eros and Storge, representing selfless
love.

3.) Triangular model of love

-Robert Sternberg proposed the triangular model of love or the triangular theory of love. This
has three components; Intimacy, Passion, Commitment. Different combinations of these three
components result in different types of love. According to Robert's theory, relationships that are
built on two or more components are more enduring compared to those that are based only on
a single component. Consummate love is what he calls it, combining intimacy, passion, and
commitment. This type of love is the strongest and most enduring, and at the same time, rare.
4.) Romantic and companionate love
-Romantic love is a passionate love displayed through physical affection. These romantic
behaviors include, but are not limited to, kissing, hugging and holding hands. This love is a desire
for another person's physical body. On the other hand, companionate love, also called
compassionate love, is characterized by mutual respect, attachment, affection, and trust. This
love usually develops out of feelings of mutual understanding and shared respect for one
another.
