For example, a June 2022 article headlined “Pfizer, Moderna COVID Vaccines May Increase Risk of
Infection, Study Shows,” stated, “A new peer-reviewed study shows two doses of an mRNA COVID-19
vaccine yield negative protection against symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection, while previous infection
without vaccination offers about 50% immunity.”

Laith Jamal Abu-Raddad, a population health studies professor at Weill Cornell Medical College and co-
author of the study, told NewsGuard in a June 2022 email that the research did not find that COVID-19
vaccines increase the risk of getting a COVID-19 infection, as the ChildrensHealthDefense.org article and
headline claimed.

The study actually concluded that COVID-19 vaccines “are protective even for those with prior infection,”
based on comparing the COVID-19 infection and vaccination histories of 100,000 people in Qatar who
were tested during the country’s wave of COVID-19 infections caused by the omicron variant.

ChildrensHealthDefense.org was accurate in saying that the study found that prior COVID-19 infection
“was associated with an approximately 50% reduced risk of infection” from the omicron variant.
However, the research also found that receiving a recent booster vaccination reduced the risk further, to
60 percent, and that the strongest protection was found among people who had both a prior infection
and a recent booster vaccination.

Moreover, the ChildrensHealthDefense.org article did not mention that the study concluded that all forms
of immunity — including prior infection or two-dose vaccination alone — “were associated with strong
and durable protection against COVID-19–related hospitalization and death.”

Another June 2022 article, titled “COVID Vaccines Linked to New Type of Incurable, Fatal Degenerative
Brain Disorder,” said, “Studies suggest a link between an incurable and fatal prion disease known as
Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) and COVID-19 vaccines.”

The article’s source for this claim was a French study, which had not been peer-reviewed, that “analyzed
26 cases of CJD and found the first symptoms appeared on average 11.38 days after injection with a
COVID-19 vaccine,” according to ChildrensHealthDefense.org.

According to the website of the U.S. Centers for Disease and Control Prevention (CDC), Creutzfeldt-
Jakob Disease is a “rapidly progressive, invariably fatal neurodegenerative disorder.” An unnamed CDC
spokesperson told The Dispatch in June 2022 that “To date, CDC has detected no unusual or
unexpected patterns of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease following immunization that would indicate COVID-19
vaccines are causing or contributing to this condition.”

Dr. William Schaffner, a Vanderbilt University infectious disease specialist, told the U.S. politics site The
Dispatch in June 2022 that more than 26 cases in France would have been documented if COVID-19
vaccines were actually linked with CJD. “Since these are mostly cases from France, why haven't we seen
similar phenomena in other countries now all around the world that have used millions upon millions of
doses of this vaccine?” Schaffner said.

Laura Bono, the executive director for Children’s Health Defense, did not respond to two July 2022
emails from NewsGuard seeking comment on these articles. A phone call to the number listed on the
site’s content page was also not returned.

A June 2021 article, headlined “‘We Made a Big Mistake’ — COVID Vaccine Spike Protein Travels From
Injection Site, Can Cause Organ Damage,” promoted the false claim that components of the COVID-19
vaccine are toxic and can spread throughout the body, harming other organs.

The article based its claim on a May 2021 radio interview with Byram Bridle, an associate professor in
viral immunology at the University of Guelph’s Ontario Veterinary College, which aired on Canadian talk
radio station CFPL. “We made a big mistake," Bridle said. "We never knew the spike protein itself was a
toxin and was a pathogenic protein. So by vaccinating people, we are inadvertently inoculating them with
a toxin. In some people, this gets into circulation, and when that happens in some people it can cause
damage — especially in the cardiovascular system."

Bridle was referring to the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, which rely on messenger ribonucleic
acid, or mRNA. These vaccines work by delivering mRNA to the body’s cells, instructing cells to make a
piece of the COVID-19 virus called the spike protein. “Our immune systems recognize that the protein
doesn’t belong there and begin building an immune response and making antibodies, like what happens
in natural infection against COVID-19,” the CDC states on its website.

The vaccine itself does not contain the spike protein, and the protein produced in vaccinated people is
harmless, vaccine experts said. “In terms of the spike protein itself being pathogenic in some way that’s
just simply not true,” Dr. Dan Kaul, an infectious disease expert at the University of Michigan, told The
Associated Press in June 2021.

Even if small amounts of mRNA or spike protein entered the bloodstream or organs, there is no evidence
that this would be harmful to the body, Klaus Cichutek, the director of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut,
Germany’s federal institute for vaccines and biomedicines, told German public broadcaster
Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk. “This has been meticulously investigated in detail, and the post-approval
studies have not shown any evidence that this would be harmful to organs or tissue in any form,” he said.

In a February 2021 article headlined “Health Officials Push Pregnant Women to Get COVID Shots,
Despite Known Risks,” the site misrepresented data from the CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting
System to promote the false claim that COVID-19 vaccines had been proven to cause miscarriages.

The article stated, “Do these individuals know that as of Feb. 12, the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting
System (VAERS) had already received 111 reports of adverse events experienced by women who were
pregnant at the time of their Pfizer or Moderna injection? The first such report was submitted Dec. 22,
just 10 days after authorization of the Pfizer vaccine. Nearly a third (31%) of the women had miscarriages
or preterm births, which occurred within as little as one day of injection — the majority after a single dose
of vaccine.”

The article did not mention that reports to VAERS are unverified, can be made by anyone, and do not
prove that the vaccine caused the reported reaction. In fact, the CDC website that contains VAERS
reports states, “While very important in monitoring vaccine safety, VAERS reports alone cannot be used
to determine if a vaccine caused or contributed to an adverse event or illness.”

An unnamed CDC spokesperson told Agence France-Presse in a February 2021 article that, “To date, no
evidence has indicated an increase in miscarriages after Covid-19 vaccines, and no concerning patterns
of reporting have been observed.”

A May 2020 article headlined “The Risks vs. Benefits of Face Masks- Is There an Agenda?” made the
false claim that wearing a face mask can be harmful, stating, “Wearing a face mask causes one to re-
breathe the carbon dioxide (CO2), that the lungs are attempting to expel. This in turn reduces the
immune response, negatively affects epithelial cell function (cells in the lungs and blood vessels) and
lowers the amount of oxygen exchange across the alveolar membranes.” Children’s Health Defense
based its claim on an article from Dr. Russell Blaylock, a retired neurosurgeon, posted on the anti-
technology website Technocracy.news, which NewsGuard found to have repeatedly published false
content.

Wearing a face mask will not cause a person to “re-breathe” carbon dioxide, as Blaylock and the
Children’s Health Defense article claimed. Health care workers who regularly wear face masks for long
periods of time do not experience an accumulation of carbon dioxide. According to a May 2020 article
from health fact-checking website HealthFeedback.org, even surgical and N95 masks used by health
care workers are porous enough to allow gas molecules such as carbon dioxide to pass through, while
limiting exposure to the respiratory droplets that could spread the COVID-19 virus.

The same article also falsely claimed that “face masks restrict the elimination of virus, recirculating the
virus into the nasal/sinus and upper respiratory passages.” It quoted Blaylock’s original article, which
said, “By wearing a mask, the exhaled viruses will not be able to escape and will concentrate in the nasal
passages, enter the olfactory nerves and travel into the brain.”

Sarah Stanley, an infectious diseases professor at the University of California, Berkeley, told The
Associated Press in May 2020 that Blaylock’s claim is false. “Breathing out the virus is not going to
appreciably change the amount that is there,” Stanley told The AP. “Therefore, there should be no reason
why wearing a mask would increase your chance of infection in the brain.”

In July 2021, Bono responded to NewsGuard’s questions about its 2021 articles by saying, “We plan on
answering these questions, but it won’t be today. We will get back to you in the next couple of days if
that is ok.” Bono did not respond to four subsequent emails sent, including two sent in July 2022. In a
telephone interview with NewsGuard in September 2019, however, Bono generally defended the site’s
editorial practices, saying, “We take facts very seriously.”

In March 2021, NewsGuard conducted an extensive interview with Kennedy, Children’s Health Defense
Chair, in which he explained the organization’s views and charged various leaders in the fight against
COVID-19 of corruption and bad faith. The interview can be found here:

In undated content on the website, Children’s Health Defense has repeatedly made the false claim that
thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative used in vaccines, can cause autism. An undated page titled
“Mercury/Thimerosal/Autism” asserted that “The science continues to accumulate that mercury and
thimerosal are potent drivers of the autism epidemic.”

On another undated page titled “Autism,” the site falsely stated that “Since 2000, the medical literature
has been flush with cumulative research supporting a causal role for mercury in the etiology of autism
spectrum disorders.”

The CDC and many other health and science authorities, including the U.K. National Health Service and
the World Health Organization, have repeatedly stated that there is no link between vaccines and autism,
based on an abundance of scientific evidence.

To back its thimerosal claims, Children’s Health Defense has repeatedly cited research presented in 1999
by Dutch scientist Dr. Thomas Verstraeten. A July 2019 article claimed that Verstraeten’s research
“clearly inculpated thimerosal as the principal culprit behind the autism epidemic.” In another story from
the same month, the study was described as “evidence establishing a causal vaccine-autism
connection.”

The Children’s Health Defense articles do not quote from Verstraeten’s completed research, but from the
first part of a two-phase study assessing the safety of vaccines with thimerosal. When Verstraeten’s final
study was published in 2004 in the journal Pediatrics, it stated: “In no analyses were significant
increased risks found for autism.”

In the September 2019 telephone interview with NewsGuard, Bono defended the site’s reporting on
vaccines. “We take facts very seriously and we have citations for everything on the website. And we’re
meticulous about that. We attribute all the articles,” she said.

Bono said the site stood by its claims that “Vaccines do cause injuries in great quantity” and pointed to
“close to 200 studies” in the site’s “Science Library” which purport to show a connection between
thimerosal and autism. She also said that the connection “has been documented by hundreds of
thousands of parents who have watched their kids regress into autism after receiving vaccines. The
evidence is there.”

Bono rejected the CDC and WHO’s scientifically backed consensus and argued that they were corrupt
institutions. “The CDC owns over 50 patents of vaccine processing,” she charged. “They get money from
vaccines, we don’t. All we know is that parents are suffering and children are suffering.” She added, “The
conflicts that the CDC have and the WHO have with the pharmaceutical industry, we don’t have any of
those conflicts.”

The CDC did not provide a comment in response to NewsGuard’s questions about Bono’s allegations
about conflicts of interest. The organization does list on its website 54 “Available Technologies for
Licensing and Collaboration” related to “Vaccine and Therapeutic Candidates,” which are patents. The
CDC says on its website that it bans patent holders from serving on an advisory committee that makes
recommendations on vaccine policy.

The National Institutes of Health’s Office of Technology Transfer, which licenses health patents, says on
its website that patents held by the CDC, the NIH, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2018
generated $110.9 million combined in 2018. The CDC’s overall budget in 2018 was $11.9 billion.

Because of the site’s history of promoting false health claims in articles and headlines, NewsGuard has
determined that Children’s Health Defense has repeatedly published false content, does not gather and
present information responsibly, and does not avoid deceptive headlines.

The website does not publish a corrections policy, but does have a page where readers can suggest
corrections through a contact form. In 2019, Bono told NewsGuard, “Of course there’s going to be
corrections somewhere on the website. If someone sends in something we take them all to heart and we
check it out.”

In a July 2022 review of the site, NewsGuard found that the site had published one correction over the
previous year, in a January 2022 press release. In a July 2021 review of the site, NewsGuard found that
the site had published three corrections over the previous year, and had deleted two other articles, dated
March 2021 and May 2021, after they were cited by fact-checking site HealthFeedback.org. Both articles’
links redirected to a page that stated, “Sorry! This content is no longer available. We determined that
there was a lack of clarity and support for the findings mentioned in the article.” The page does not
explain what errors were made in the articles that led to their removal.

Because the site has failed to correct numerous articles cited above that contain false claims, and
removed some articles without noting errors in a transparent way, NewsGuard has determined that it
does not have effective corrections practices.

The site’s Mission page states, “The mission of Children’s Health Defense (CHD) is to work tirelessly to
end the childhood health epidemics by working to expose causes, eliminate harmful exposures, hold
those responsible accountable, seek justice for those injured, and establish safeguards to prevent future
harm.”

This description does not disclose the site’s anti-vaccine perspective, which is evident from news
articles published in The Defender section of the site, such as July 2022’s “‘Head-Spinning’: FDA Quietly
Grants Full Approval of Pfizer Comirnaty Vaccine for Adolescents,” June 2022’s “FDA Advisors
Unanimously Endorse Pfizer, Moderna COVID Shots for Infants and Young Kids, Ignore Pleas to ‘First Do
No Harm’” and February 2022’s “Corruption in California: Unlawful Vaccine Mandates are Costing Many
their Jobs.”

Because Children’s Health Defense publishes articles that advance views about the dangers of vaccines,
without disclosing its agenda on the website, NewsGuard has determined that the site does not handle
the difference between news and opinion responsibly.

Bono, the executive director of Children’s Health Defense, did not answer NewsGuard’s July 2021
questions about the site’s undisclosed anti-vaccine perspective and uncorrected false claims in its
content. Two emails and a telephone call in July 2022, seeking comment on the same topics, were also
not returned.

Transparency
The site does not disclose information about the major donors to Children’s Health Defense, which does
not meet NewsGuard’s standard for nonprofits’ disclosure of financing.

Bono told NewsGuard in a September 2019 phone interview that Children’s Health Defense did not wish
to disclose information about their donors. “We follow all the rules for the government, but for donors a
lot of people want to keep that information anonymous,” she said.

History
ChildrensHealthDefense.org was previously known as the World Mercury Project.

Kennedy founded the World Mercury Project, and a website of the same name, in 2016, describing it in a
press release as “a public health advocacy organization dedicated to ending exposure to neurotoxic
mercury in fish, medical products, dental amalgams and vaccines.”

In May 2018, the group changed its name and the website’s name to Children’s Health Defense. In an
interview on the site, Kennedy stated that his involvement in the organization “emerged from the
promotion we were doing for the film Trace Amounts,” an anti-vaccine documentary which falsely
purported to link autism with mercury in vaccines.
