A. TITLE:
IMPROVING STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY BY USING
EXTENSIVE READING TO THE ELEVENTH GRADE
STUDENTS’ OF SMA NEGERI 2 MEMPAWAH HULU
IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2022/2023

B. Research Bacground
Attempts to use English are only active at the time Teaching and
Learning Activities only. This situantion makes students English
Vocabulary is relatively less developed. This is of course very influential
on the language learning process English in particular and mastery of other
subject matter on level. The low mastery of English students is also
caused by low interest in reading students only read the text books they
have even in general students only read when in class Engglish subject are
taught about skills speak. Language skills include listening skills, speaking
skills, speaking skills, reading skills, and writing skills. These language
skills are not only used in learning English subject, but it also used for
studying other subject areas. Without understanding skills language, it is
impossible to understand other subjects well.

Vocabulary is a set of words that are familiar in one’s language.


Vocabulary, usually develoved with age, serves as a useful and
fundamental tool for communication and acquiring knowledge. The term
vocabulary refers to the collection of common words used in
communication as well as words used in language. Increasing your
vocabulary is the best way to get more meaning out of it. Get direct and
indirect vocabulary knowledge. The majority of students indirectly learn
vocabulary through discusing and listening to their favorite activities, such
as reading and watching vidioes. We concentrate on intensive reading
becouse this research is concerned with the use of intensive reading in
learning. Thefondational language skill that must be mastered before
mastering english skill is vocabulary. There are several word devinitions
provided by some profesionals. According to Hornby (2006:1645),
vocabulary is all the words that a person knows or uses and it is all the
words in a particular language. According to Hatch and Brown (1995: 1)
vocabulary is a list or set of words for a particular language or a list or set
of words that individual speakers of a language might use.

Extensive Reading (ER) is an approach to reading a second


language. When the reader reads extensively, it means he reads light and
enjoyable books to build reading speed and fluency. Extensive Reading
(ER) is one of the approaches that meets these principles because of its
nature that encourages the independence and freedom of learners in
choosing as much reading material as possible, which suits their respective
interests and abilities (Day & Bamford, 1998).

C. Research Problems

Based on the background explanation above, the research problem


can be formulated as follows: 'what is the student's perception of learning
English by improving vocabulary mastery using Extensive Reading, at
SMA Negeri 2 Mempawah Hulu in the midst of students' lack of
knowledge with English comprehension.

D. Research Purpose

The purpose of this study was to determine the improvement of


students' vocabulary mastery by using reading extensive English learning
at SMA Negeri 2 Mempawah Hulu..

E. Significance of Study

The importance of studying the writer hopes that this research can
contribute to the Englishy Language teach and study. It has two main
significances namely: Practical and Theorytical significance:
1. Theoritical Significance
This research provides a solution to find the right method of teaching
vocabulary.
2. Practical Significance
a. For IKIP PGRI
As a reference for planning and develoving English courses in
improving vocabulary mastery with extensive reading in learning
English for the next generation
b. For Students
The results of this study can be used as a reference for
improvement students ability to understand more about improving
vocabulary mastery with extensive reading.
c. For Teachers
The results of this study can help teachers to present it more easly
m material on improving vocabulary mastery with extensive
reading at SMA Negeri 2 Mempawah Hulu.
d. Others Researchers
To provide additional imformation for others researchers who wish
conduct further research in related fields regarding increasing
vocabulary mastery with extensive reading.

F. Scope Of Research

This section will clarify the term research used in this study
consistig of reserch variables and terminology.

1. Research Variables (s)


Research projet test the independent variables of extesion reading
learning about vocabulary larnig. Elevents grade students recieve care
monitored by one of the researchers while teaching teaching teachers
use this method. The dependent variable is a student mastery of
vocabulary developed. The lesson is independent by using a reading of
extensive to collect a list of students vocabulary words with this
research.
2. Research Terminology
Consists of a brief explanation of the keywords used in the research
Example;
a. Learning Vocabulary
The term “Vocabulary” refers to the collection of common words
used in communication and word used in lnguage. Increasingf your
vocabulary is the best way to get more meaning than it. Get direct
and indirect vocabulary knowledge. The majority of students
indirectly learn vocabulary through discussing and listening to their
favorite activities, such as reading extensive. We concenterate on
reading extensive becouse this research is related to the use of
vocabulary in learning English.
b. Learning Extensive Reading
Learn vocabulary by reading extnsive, humans have enjoyed and
looked at intensive reading at least as long as we can talk. This can
be very beneficial for foregn language teaching becouse it is and
important component of our language experience. In addition, our
foreign language class can be increased and ddistimulated by many
benefits that are brought by reading extensive. By reading
extensive students will be easy to understand little by little
vocabulary from the contents of the reading to be easly understood
by students.

G. Research Methology

1. Research Design
This study uses a descriptive quantitative research methodology to
examine how well students learn when reading extensive is used as a
teaching tool. This special research design tries to collect data to
systematically explain the phenomenon, circustances, or population.
Research that takes a descriptive nail summarizing existing phenomena
by using data to characterize individuals or groups. This assess the
nature of the situation. The main purpose of most descriptive studies is
to describe sometihing like that. Use descriptive design, any current
statutus or previously condensed. This type or research calls a group of
achievements, attitudes, behaviors, or other nature. What is the topic of
descriptive research, or what is is? Infomation is presented as it is or.
There is no disturbance at all.
2. Subject of Study
11th grade students of IPS fro SMA Negeri 2 Mempawah Hulu, were
happy to be included in this study. 48 class students function as
subjects. They include 19 girl and 29 boys in the research focus group.
Racial makeup this clss is as follows, everything Dayak and divided by
christianity and chatolics for this experiment, the subject was asked to
study vocabulary by reading extensive in class. We know that all
students will appreciate listening and reading while learning and
realizin g their success using this teaching strategy.
3. Technique and tool of Data Collection
According to the title of the study project, the deployment of the
quistionnaire and observation will be used to collect data for this
project. When we use experimental reseach connected with the
research metthod used in this project, researchers will watch how the
teacher gives lessons when students learn it through instructions to
read extensive. After the teacher assigns various exercieses or
activities related to increasing the mastery of students vocabulary by
reading extensive, researchers then collect data from the teacher.
4. The technique for data analysis and interpretation are entirely in form
of statistical analysis. The focus is to measure the average score,
standard deviation, and other statistical test that are consistent
regardless of a particularl topic or the variables being studied.
