In The Odyssey and “Siren Song” by Margaret Atwood, the Sirens are seen as women who sing

songs that sound beautiful but are deadly to whoever listens to them. The effects of their songs also
show how they are very deadly.

The point of view demonstrates how the Sirens are seen as deadly even though the songs
appear beautiful. For example, in The Odyssey the author writes “Come closer, famous Odysseus –
Achaea’s pride and glory – moor your ship on our coast so you can hear our song!” The Sirens are
inviting him to listen to their song and he knows it is not safe because he and his crew took precautions
to block their ears. The Sirens are trying to flatter him so he will go to them and listen to their song.
Furthermore, in “Siren Song” by Margaret Atwood, she writes “Only you, only you can, you are unique at
last. Alas it is a boring song but it works every time.” This shows that Sirens know what their songs do to
people and still sing them every time they find someone. The Siren also tries to flatter this person by
saying they are unique and are the only person who can listen to her song.

The tone in both passages proves that Sirens’ songs are deceptive because they appear to sound
good, but harm people when heard. In The Odyssey, the author writes “and I stopped the ears of my
comrades one by one. They bound me hand and foot in the tight ship-” Him and his crew used safety
measures to deafen themselves from the Siren’s songs because they already knew the effects of them.
He also was tied up in case he tried to leave when tempted with their beautifully sounding songs. In
addition, in “Siren Song” by Margaret Atwood, she writes “I don’t enjoy singing this trio, fatal, and
valuable.” The Siren appears helpless by saying she doesn’t want to sing the song, but it is how she is
trying to deceive the person in the passage. When she says she doesn’t enjoy singing that makes the
person drop their guard a little because they start to feel like she doesn’t want to harm anyone.
