Professor Knopps Releases New Book

Professor Anthony Knopps is a well-known face on AC’s campus. He teaches classes in Political Science and Communications. He ventured
out to Adrian as he was recruited here to teach. In his time of being here, he has enjoyed every moment of being on campus and the
interactions/discussions that take place with students. Outside of the classroom, he is also a published writer of many children’s books.
Knopps has been writing for a number of years, with previous medical injuries being a push to write and recover. In the past, he has written
many books on different topics, more than just children’s books. 

Knopps’ first Children’s story is But We Only Have One Grape, which came out in December of 2022. There are plans in the works for a Spanish-
language version of the book to come out in the first quarter of 2023. The book tells the story of a second-grader who is dealing with the very
problem of food insecurity. His parents recently lost their jobs, and he finds himself in the kitchen one night. He sees a single grape on a stem.
If he eats it, he knows there will be no food in the house. So, he protects it, eventually taking the seeds out in a quest to grow more grapes to
feed his family. The journey takes him through the very real challenges that so many kids face, not enough food and not enough food on a
consistent basis. 

The inspiration for him to write came initially from his daughter, whose senior thesis was about the impact of food access. He spoke with her
and educated himself on how this is a very big problem. He learned that “Food insecurity can impact a child’s cognitive development, hurt
their ability to concentrate in class because they aren’t getting enough sleep and aren’t getting the food they need.”

From this book, he hopes that people who read it can understand the severity of this issue. This is an issue that is largely in the shadows
because “food insecurity” isn’t as noticeable as a broken arm. There is also a stigma attached to reaching out for help. Many charities have
reached out to Knopps about the book in hopes of creating partnerships. The purpose of this is to get the book into the hands of young people,
not just in the US, but overseas (one reason for the Spanish version). Recent statistics show that it’s not just a problem with young kids. As
many as 40% of college students are food insecure. There are a variety of reasons for this.
