Grade Level 2nd grade

Learning Objective SOL 2.3 Students will investigate and understand that matter
Content

can exist in different phases.

a.) matter has mass and takes up space
b.) solids, liquids, and gases have different characteristics

In this interactive white board activity, the children will touch the board to click and drag
the pictures and words to corresponding categories and learn about the different states

of matter and their properties.

Activity When all students are completed with their previous activity
and their desks are clean, except for their Chromebooks that
would be opened up to the corresponding browser to enter
the proper code, I will introduce the activity planned for that
day on matter and its properties and will explain the activity
broadly as a whole so the students are aware and
understanding of what we will be doing during that time.
Logging in to Smart Exchange, I will be using the activity called
“States of Matter: The Basics” created by Elizabeth Sutliff.
When I have the class code set up, students will then begin to
log in on their own devices in order to complete and follow
along with their activities. Once the activity is set up, all
students are logged in successfully, and all eyes are on the
board, I will begin the activity.
▫ Beginning on the first slide, the question will ask
students what they think matter is and instead of them
typing answers into the box, I would have them raise
their hands and explain what they think matter is. For
this question I would give about 30 seconds to a
minute for them to share all their answers.
▫ Over the next three slides, I will go over the
information provided on the slides and explain the
differences in the properties of matter, the definitions
on the slides (atoms, mass, etc.) and the pictures of
solids, liquids, and gases.

▫ Slides 5,6, and 7 each have an interactive part to them
and the students can individually “pull” or drag the
specific properties of each state and they will read the
sentences and give further elaboration if there is any
confusion.
▫ For the next couple slides, we will explore the
molecules for each state of matter and how they
change speed or form when different temperatures are
introduced. Students are able to come up to the board
and interact/experiment with the PHET simulations.
▫ Slides 10 and 11 are sorting activities where students
can go up and sort the pictures or words into the
correct categories, slide 12 I would delete and orally
ask students what they observed and give about 30
seconds for them to share what they noticed had
changed in the molecules when different temperatures
were applied.
▫ Slide 13 is a crossword puzzle of all the vocab words
learned in the activity and students can take turns to
find a word if they would like to go up to the board. I
would delete the last exit ticket slide and end with the
crossword puzzle as a fun way to finish the activity.
If we are unable to get through the entire activity in one
sitting, I would pick up where we had left off on the following
day of the week to complete it. Once this activity is complete, I
would designate a day to perform an experiment that allows
students to interact hands on and observe changes to different
states of matter (such as ice cubes with a little toy frozen
inside) from solid to liquid or gas.
