FALL 2021: First-Year Seminar
MIDTERM
This exam consists of two parts. Part I requires you to simply “fill in the blank.” This section of the exam will count for 25% of
your overall exam grade. Part II requires you to write essays in response to the questions. This section of the exam will count
for 75% of your overall exam grade (i.e. each question will count for 25%). Please write your answers in spaces provided below
and then do the same for your essays. Save the document and then upload it to the Assignment section of Blackboard.
Part II: Essays: Answer three out of the six questions. And, be sure to define your terms!
(1) Why does Socrates argue that in order for a “just” state to exist, women and children must be
held in common?
(2) Who is “happier,” the philosopher king or the tyrant? Why? (be sure to note any paradoxes
here)
(3) What, according to Socrates, is the “origin of injustice”? (be sure to discuss the origins of the
state).
(4) How does the continuous war in 1984 serve the Inner Party?
(6) Why must the Past (as it is represented in monuments, literature, and art) be abolished in 1984?
