I. Your Name: Lindsey Garber

II. Unit Title: Unit 2: Byzantine Empire - The Great Schism
III. Unit Overview: This unit will start with an overview of the Byzantine Empire,
which the students have somewhat been introduced to. This day will be going over
the Great Schism between Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox.
IV. Unit Learning Goal: Students will be able to explain through the use of primary
and secondary sources the importance of the rise and fall of the Byzantine Empire.
V. Daily Objectives:
A. Students will collect data through the use of documents about the Great
Schism and important terms they need to know.
B. Students will understand the importance and connection between the Church
and religion from the previous unit.
C. Students will know about the reasons why there was a schism in the Church.
VI. Instructional Sequence:
1. Start the day by talking to the students. Asking how they are. Explain
to them what they will be doing today. Talk about the activity and
sheets on the wall. (5 minutes)
2. Continue by telling the students to take out their notes from the
previous day, they will be using this later in the hour. (1 minute)
3. Tell your students that they are going to learn about the Great Schism
today. Ask them if any of them know what the Great Schism is or if
they can guess. Ask them if they know what schism is. (2 minutes)
4. Tell them that half the room is going to go to the 4 stations. On one
side of the room, pass out the document graphic organizer the
students need to answer. Then count them 1-4 giving each student a
number 1-4. Once they have their numbers they go to that station.
They are to talk to each about what they see. I will give them 4ish
minutes per station. (6 minutes explaining and passing things out)
5. The other half of the room is to pull out a sheet of paper. Have several
questions on the board for them to answer. While they are waiting to
do the walk around activity, they will be answering these questions.
They review questions about the previous day and what they have
learned. (5 minutes)
6. Allow students to work on this for 10 minutes one side, 10 minutes the
other after they get everything. (20 minutes)
7. Go over the questions with the students (10 minutes)
8. Finally, go over the rest of the PowerPoint. Quickly explaining the
