General Information
Description
This is a three-week course in health and wellness concentrating on nutrition, complementary and
integrative medicine, and stress management. Information will be delivered by PowerPoint,
lecture/discussion, and live demonstrations with class participation.

Course Expectations
Students should understand the importance of food labels and how to properly interpret them. They
should know the latest nutritional recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans from the
USDA and common food allergies.
Students should be familiar with different modalities of complimentary and integrative medicine such
as cupping, scraping, and dry needling including what they treat, how each works, and what makes
someone a good candidate for such treatments.
Students should be able to identify causes of stress and the effect of stress on mental and physical
health. Additionally, students should be familiar with multiple ways to help manage stress as well as
some to prevent it.

Course Materials
Required Materials
Students will receive a copy of the PowerPoint slides for each week’s presentation; however, students
should bring a notebook and pen/pencil to take notes.

Optional Materials
Students who wish to participate in activities and demonstrations in weeks 2 and 3 should wear
comfortable clothing that is easy to move in such as athletic or leisurewear. Please bring a yoga mat
to week 3 if you have one. Additionally, those wishing to participate in certain demonstrations in week
2 will first need to sign a waiver. No waiver is required to observe.

Required Text
All required reading will be in the form of handouts provided by the instructor or websites shared
during class.

 Understand the role of complimentary and integrative medicine
 Know the purpose of and the practice of dry needling, cupping, and
scraping
 Identify contraindications for and side effects of dry needling,
cupping, and scraping
Week 3 Stress Management
 Discuss signs of stress on physical and mental health
 Identify causes of stress and know how to prevent some in the
future
 Be familiar with yoga, meditation, and body scanning
 Identify potential stress-relieving practices

There are no grades associated with this three-week class; however, your participation and
attentiveness will increase your knowledge and ability to positively affect your health and wellness
and that of those around you. Please share all your questions with the class, and we will do our best to
answer them all.
