To demonstrate and practice the step-by-step procedure on the modeling,
analysis, and design of a 40-story RC building.

Step by Step Procedure

1. Exporting the Model from ETABS

Step 1: Select Working Unit and generate the Text readable for exporting

Click the File Menu > Export. Select Perform3D Text file. Save this text file in a
designated folder.

NOTE: When exporting, the model should be first run for gravity load analysis.

2. Importing the Model in Perform3D

Step 2-1: Start a new structure

Click the File Perform3D icon > Start new structure.

Step 2-2: Select working units and save the structure

Provide the structure’s information and select desired working units. Then, select
the minimum spacing between nodes. Browse to select the desired location for
saving structure. Press OK.

Step 2-3: Specify element groups

Click the Elements button > Click New.


Click the drop down menu to select Element type.

Select Column and specify group name (see figure, in this case group name is
Columns). Press OK.

Select Shear walls and specify group name (see figure, in this case group name is
RC walls). Press OK.

Step 2-4: Start importing

Select Import .

To import frame members, choose the element group as Columns. Browse to select
the export file developed from ETABS in Step 1. Specify the length units. Skip first 3
lines containing structure information. Check the Reads nodes as well as elements
option, then press Test.

Check if all frame elements are imported and press OK.

To import RC walls, choose element group as RC walls. Browse to select the export
file developed from ETABS in Step 1. Specify the length units. Skip first 3845 lines
containing the information of the frame members. Check the Reads nodes as well
as elements option Select node sequence. Press Test.

Hint to check number lines skip: Paste the data of export file in excel sheet to see
how many lines should be skipped for RC walls.

Check if all RC walls elements are imported and press OK.

Step 2-5: Separating beams and columns groups

Beams and columns are imported in the element group Columns in Step 2-4. To
separate them in different groups, make new element group Beams by following
Step 2-3.

Select the current group as Columns. Click Change Group. Select group beams to
which beams elements are to be moved. Select all beams by Plan View. Click
Move.

3. Define Material Properties

Step 3-1: Concrete properties

Click the Component Properties button .


Click the Material tab.

Select Inelastic 1D Concrete Material using the drop down menu.

Click New.

Specify the name material as Concrete and select the working units. Press OK.

Click Basic Relationship. Select the Shape of Relationship as Tri-linear.

For Tension Strength, click No.

For Strength Loss, click Yes.

Provide the modulus of elasticity for concrete. Then, provide cracking and crushing
strength (fc’) and corresponding strain values. Click Strength Loss tab.

Provide degrading and residual strain values and ratio of fc’ to residual capacity.
Click Graph to display graph.

Check the graph if everything is OK, click Save.

Step 3-2: Steel properties

Select Inelastic Steel Material, Non-Buckling using the drop down menu.

Click New.

Specify the name material as Steel and select the working units. Press OK.

Click Basic Relationship. Select Shape of Relationship as E-P-P.

For Symmetry, click Yes.


For Strength Loss, click No.

Provide the modulus of elasticity for steel. Provide the yield strength (fy) and
corresponding strain values. Click Graph.

Check the graph if everything is OK, click Save.

4. Define Member Sections

Step 4-1: RC shear walls member section

Click the Component Properties button .


Click Cross Sects tab.

In Type, select the Shear Wall, Inelastic Section option using the drop down menu.

Click New.

Provide the name of section as Boundary Zone. Click Auto Size for fiber area and
locations.

For concrete fibers

Set Material Type to Inelastic ID Concrete Material using the drop down menu.
Set Material Name to Concrete (which is already prepared in Section 3.1).
Provide wall thickness at 800 mm and the no. of fibers 8 (which is the maximum
allowed by Perform3D).

For steel fibers

Set Material Type to Inelastic Steel Material, Non-buckling using the drop down
menu. Select Material Name Steel (which is already prepared in Section 3.1).

In Specify area as click PERCENT of concrete area.


Put percent or thickness as 1 (1%) and no. of fibers 8 (which is the maximum
allowed by Perform3D).

Click Out-Of-Plane.

Provide Bending Thickness, Torsion Thickness, Young Modulus, and Poisson Ratio.

Click Check.

If everything is OK (shown in green color) then Save.

Click Material.

Using the drop down menu, select Elastic Shear Material for a Wall.

Click New.

Provide name as Shear Mat.


Provide value for Shear Modulus, G.

Note: Similarly for Web of RC shear walls, member section can be prepared
repeating for RC wall’s web properties Step 4.1.

Step 4-2: RC column member section

Click Cross Sects.


Select Column, Reinforced Concrete Section.

Provide name C800x1400, press OK.

Specify Section Shape as Rectangle.

Provide dimensions B and D.


Provide values of Young Modulus and Poisson’s Ratio
Click Calculate.

Click Cross Sects.


Select Beam, Reinforced Concrete Section.

Provide name C800x1400, press OK.

Provide dimensions B and D.

Click Inelastic.
Select Moment Hinge Rotation Type.

Provide name M-Hinge, press OK.

In the Basic F-D Relationship tab:

Provide values of Fy Positive, Fy Negative, Fu Positive, Fu Negative, Du Positive Du


Negative, Dx Positive, and Dx Negative.

In the Strength Loss tab:

Provide values of DL Positive, DL Negative, DR Positive, DR Negative, and FR/FU.

In the Cyclic Degradation tab:

Provide values for all the 5 points.

Click Check.

5. Define Compounds

Step 5-1: RC shear walls compound

Click the Component Properties button .


Click Compound tab.

Select Shear Wall Compound Component option using the drop down menu list.

Click New.

Provide Name as Boundary Zones.

In the Type drop down menu list, select Shear Wall, Inelastic Section using the drop
down menu. Select name as Boundary Zones (which is made in section 4.1) using
the drop down menu.

Provide Wall Thickness (i.e., 800 mm), provide Young Modulus.

Select Shear Material Type as Elastic Shear Material for Wall.


Select Shear Material Name as Shear Mat (which is made is step 4.1).

Provide Effective Wall Thickness.

Press Check.

If everything is OK, then click Save.

Note: Similarly for the Web of RC shear walls, the compound can be prepared by
repeating for RC wall’s web properties Step 5.1.

Step 5-2: RC column compound

Select Frame Member Compound Component option using the drop down menu
list.

Click New and give the compound a name.

In the Compound Type dropdown list, select End Zone for Beam or Column. In the
Compound Name dropdown list, select Default End Zone. Press Add.

In the Compound Type dropdown list, select Moment Hinge Rotation Type, while in
the Compound Name dropdown list, select Beam Hinge Select. Press Add.

In the Compound Type dropdown list, select Beam Reinforced Concrete Section.

In the Compound Name dropdown list, select G400x700. In the Length Type
dropdown tab, select the Proportion of unassigned length, give a value of 1 in the
length value tab and press Add.

Repeat the process; add hinge and end zone again. Then press Check and Save
buttons.

6. Section Cut
Click the Structure Sections button .
In the Define Sections tab, press New button and give the section cut a name.

In the Choose element group, select the column group and select the all the
columns in a particular story by draging.

In the Choose element group, select the Shear Walls Group and select the all the
columns in a perticular story by draging.

7. Drift Definition
Click the Drifts and Deflections buttons .
In the Drifts, press the New button and give the drift a name.

Select the direction of the drift in the Specify drift direction.


Select the Upper node in a story and then the Lower node in a story.

Press the Test button to complete the drift definition.
