Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 6 Self – Learning Module on Formulating the rule
in finding the nth term using different strategies (looking for a pattern, guessing and
checking, working backwards) e.g. 4,7,13,16,…n(the nth term is 3n + 1)!
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from
Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge Schools Division
Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership with the Local
Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto.
The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.

Example 1:
Problem:

Nikki got a low score in her Physical Test for stamina. To develop her
stamina, she decided to plan for self-designed jogging routine. On the first
week, she jogged for 10 minutes a day, and for each succeeding week, she
added 3 minutes. How many minutes a day did she jog on the 5th week?

How are we going to get the missing term? What pattern is used?
 Determine the order of numbers if it is ascending or descending.
 Find the difference between the consecutive terms.
 To find the missing term, use the difference between terms.

1st week 2nd week 3rd week 4th week 5th week
10 13 16 _______ ?

(13 –10 = 3) ( 16 -13 =3) ( 19 – 16 = 3) ( 21 – 19 =3)

Therefore, she jogged 21 minutes a day on the 5th week.

A list of number arranged in a row is called a number sequence. Each


number in a sequence is called a term.

Example 2:

In the sequence 4,7,10,13… find the 7th term.


Notice that the terms of the sequence have a constant difference of 3, thus it
can be guessed that the term contains 3n. And based from the 0th term must
be 1, hence, the nth term is 3n+1
1st term------- 3(1) + 1= 4
2nd term-------3(2) + 1 =7
3rd term -------3(3) + 1= 10
4th term -------3(4) + 1 = 13
5th term -------3(5) + 1 = 16
6th term -------3(6) + 1 = 19
7th term--------3(7) + 1 = 22
The 7th term then is 22.
The sequence has a difference of 3 between each number. The pattern
continues by adding 3 to the next number.
A sequence is an enumerated collection of objects (usually numbers) that
follow a certain pattern or rule.
The “nth term” is a formula that enables you to find the next term in a
sequence.
The letter “n” stands for the term, so to find the 7th term in a sequence just
substitute 7 in the formula in place of n.
The formula that you will use for finding the nth term is based on the pattern
made in the sequence.

Example 3:
Study the given sequence. Find the missing term/s.

3, 9, 15, 21, 27, ____, _____ …

Again, the sequence has a difference of 6 between each number. And the
preceding number is 3.
Thus, the rule must be 6n-3. So, what is the 6th and 7th terms?

Pattern rule

6n-3=n Multiply the common difference then subtract 3.

6(1) -3 =3 1st term


6(2) –3=9 2nd term
6(6) – 3 = 33 6th term
6(7) – 3 =39 7th term

There are also other special sequences that are common.

1. Fibonacci Sequence

0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, ...


The Fibonacci Sequence is found by adding the two numbers before it
together.
The number 2 is found by adding the two numbers before it ( 1+ 1 ).
The number 21 is found by adding the two numbers before it (8+13).
The next number in the sequence above would be 55 ( 21+34).

2. Square Numbers

1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49…

They are the squares of counting/whole numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

1x1=1 5x5= 25
2x2=4 6x6= 36
3x3=9 7x7 = 49
4x4=16 8x8= 64

3. Cube Numbers

1, 8, 27, 64, 125…

They are the cubes of counting numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.


1x1x1=1
2x2x2=8
3x3x3=27
4x4x4=64
5x5x5=125
