Initiation of a “young member” program for the Autoantibody Standardization Committee

(ASC)

Introduction and Objective

During recent ASC meetings, an initiative was introduced to recruit talented young
physicians/scientists to the Committee in order to give them the opportunity to interact early in
their careers with established investigators in the field of immunodiagnostics. Angela Tincani
suggested having a new category of membership - an intern-like position that will cultivate a
new generation of autoimmunity experts interested in working on issues pertaining to
autoantibody standardization. The internship will include a 3-year term serving as an ASC
member to gain experience and further develop interest on the subject.

Requirements and Conditions for ASC Young Members

1. Candidates must demonstrate research/clinical interests and experience working with

human autoantibodies and their application to diagnostic medicine or clinical medicine in
general. Candidates are expected to have documented productivity in completing projects
in research and/or the clinical laboratory. Candidates with first-author or corresponding-
author publications on human autoantibodies are preferred.
2. Candidates should have a primary affiliation with an academic or industrial institution.
3. Candidates should be prepared to participate in selected subprojects within the activities of
the ASC. Topics will be determined based on the candidate’s expertise and interest as well
as the needs of ASC.
4. Candidates should be available to attend and participate at the Annual Meeting of the ASC,
normally held at the same time during the American College of Rheumatology Annual
Meeting.
5. The proposed term of initial membership is 3 years. Thereafter, the member may become a
full member of the ASC (with 4-year renewable terms) upon favorable performance review
based in part on participation and approval by the majority of the ASC.
