ASSERTION-REASON QUESTIONS
Question 15-16 consists of two statements – Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Answer these questions by selecting the
appropriate option given below:
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.
15. Assertion(A): On a cloudy day, the rate of photosynthesis will decrease.
Reason(R): The stomata close, leading to reduced transpiration.
16. Assertion(A):Photosynthesis takes place only during the day.
Reason(R):Light energy is required for the process of photosynthesis.
17. Assertion(A): Respiration in living beings is called an exothermic reaction.
Reason(R): Respiration in living beings involves with the absorption of heat energy

CASE-BASED QUESTIONS
17. Read the following passage and answer the questions from (i) to (ii):
Green plants make their food through photosynthesis and are called autotrophs. All other organisms depend upon
green plants for food and are referred to as heterotrophs. Green plants carry out photosynthesis by using the light
energy of the sun. The first phase of reaction is directly light driven therefore is called light reaction. The second
phase of the process is not directly light driven but is dependent on the products of light reactions and are called
dark reactions.
17(i).Name the products formed during the light phase of photosynthesis. (1)
17(ii). In the overall process of photosynthesis, how many sugar molecule/s is/are produced? (1)
17(iii). A plant is provided with ideal conditions for photosynthesis and supplied with isotope 14CO2. When the
products of the process are analysed carefully, what would be the nature of the product? (1)
(Hint: Whether glucose and/or oxygen will be normal/labelled)

SUBJECTIVE QUESTIONS
18.Rings of cartilage are present around trachea. Give reason. (1)
19. Why is there a difference in the rate of breathing between aquatic organisms and terrestrial organisms? Explain.
(2)
20. Draw a diagram of the human respiratory system and label-pharynx, trachea, diaphragm and alveolar sac on it.
