COURSE EXPECTATIONS FRENCH

French Department Parent/Student Agreement
Welcome to French!!  After reading the Course Expectations and completing the questions below, please
type your full name in the text box for the assignment.  Have your supervising adult review this information
and type their full name in the text box as well.  Doing so signifies that you have read all the course
expectations carefully, and that you understand them and will comply with the directives given.  Then,
submit this lesson for review by your teacher.

I am looking forward to working with you this semester!

Read the following carefully:

Learning a language from a book (even an online text) is different from the way you learned your first
language.  Now, you know how to read.  Then, you learned by listening and watching mouths move to make
sounds and connecting language to activities.  One of the most difficult things about French is the
pronunciation of it.  Our French course is equipped to help you absorb and practice the new language.
When doing French lessons, you’ll be using several senses and learning techniques.  Plan to read, listen, and
speak.  It’s common to approach a lesson knowing that you need to read the text, but additionally in French,
you must learn to understand and pronounce the words.

To help you with understanding audios and pronunciation you should:

You should plan to spend 10-15 minutes per lesson listening to the audios and repeating them yourself; this
will help you learn pronunciation..

Feel free to make any appointment with your teacher for help, too.

You will be creating a Sound Resource Sheet when you do the lesson Pronounce It in French. Use that sheet
to practice pronunciation of letters and letter combinations each day for a few minutes until you know the
sounds each letter and letter combination make.

At the end of each unit, you’ll find a glossaire (glossary) of the new words used in that unit.  Similarly, at the
end of each lesson, there is a vocabulary list of the new words from that lesson.  Each entry has an audio
accompanying it.  Use these to listen and practice saying words and expressions.

To help you learn to write in French and/or complete written projects you should:

Start your own French notebook.  Verbs are especially important.  When you learn new verbs in a lesson,
practice listening and speaking them, and then write out the full conjugation of the verb in your notebook as
you see it in the verb chart in the lesson.

The lesson vocabulary lists and glossaries are also resources for helping you write in French.  They list words
that you should learn and use.  Start with those when writing sentences.  If you try to write a sentence in
English first, and then translate to French, that will be too hard.  Your English is much more advanced; your
French sentences should be simple declarative sentences, much like those of elementary students.
Find examples in the lesson texts to help you with writing and translating.  Many of the French sentences
have English translations right after them.  After reading the translation, go back to the French and figure out
what the French words mean.

Speaking of writing…you are not allowed to use an online translator for this course.  In fact, you should be
able to find all the words and expressions that you need right in the lessons.  If I think that you’ve used an
online translator to write a project or answer a question, it will be reassigned, and there will be grading
consequences along with a note about academic integrity in your file.  It is a form of cheating.

Online translators are different from dictionaries.  Rarely, you may want to look up a word or two in a
dictionary.  Please use the online dictionary, wordreference.com.  Before deciding what word to use, be sure
to read through all the entries.

When you open a quiz or test, be prepared to complete it in one sitting.  You should not leave the computer.
Clicking “submit answer” on a question keeps the quiz or test active.  You are not allowed to have any other
browser or window open while taking tests and quizzes because you may not, of course, look up any answers
while taking quizzes or tests.  The consequence for cheating on a quiz or test is a 0 on it.

Each unit has a project in it called Parlons français, which means “Let’s speak French”.  The project document
gives you complete instructions for completion.  As you prepare for this project, use the sound files that are
inserted in the document.  Do not submit the parlons français project.  I will grade and submit it for you after
you’ve called me to complete it.

There are a variety of types of questions in the lessons:  multiple choice, multiple select, fill-in-the blank, and
short essay.  You are required to answer every question.  Do not leave any questions blank.

Question #1Essay
Scenario:  You are assigned to translate some phrases from English to French in a written project.  Based on
the text in this lesson, where do you look to find the words and sentence constructions that you need?
List 3 places other than wordreference.com.
I can find works in the vocabulary, glossary, and the French notebook I can make which contains
verbs.
Question #2Essay
Scenario:  You are having trouble understanding the sounds in French and speaking.  Based on the text in
this lesson, what can you do?  Describe 4 different ways to help you with pronunciation and understanding
audios. Do not include wordreference.com.
One way to make my pronunciation better is to spend at least 10 to 15 minutes per lesson learning
the audios and repeating them to perfect my pronunciation.

Second, I can make an appointment with my teacher if I need help.

Third, I should also take notes from the - Sounds of French - that my teacher gave me to help me
with my pronunciation.

Fourth, I can also use the glossary, and the vocabulary. Both of then have an audio next to each
word which can help me master my pronunciation.
Question #3Essay
Based on the text in this lesson, list 4 things that you may not do in this course.
First, I am not allowed to use an online translator during this course.
Second, I am not allowed to have another browser opened while doing a quiz or test.
Third, I am not allowed to submit my Parlons Français Project without telling my teacher.
And fifth, I should never leave any question blank.
Question #4Essay
I have read the course expectations carefully, I understand them fully, and I will comply with all the
directives given. I understand the consequences for not following the guidelines listed here.
