Introduction

2
Objective
• Determining properties of NG – composing methane with some volume % H2 in
a user interactive way.

• Finding out property variations as we change the mixture composition under

standard conditions.

• Implementation of Cantera to solve these problems.

3
• Calculator development using 1D – Combustion Model.
• Calculator is coded to perform analysis of natural gas
combustion process.
Phase 1: • Studying variation of combustible mixture properties
and fuel properties as Hydrogen is mixed with natural
gas.
• Theoretical verification of calculator results.

4
• When hydrogen is added to natural gas (methane), the resulting mixture
exhibits complex combustion behavior that cannot be predicted by simple
mixing rules alone.

• Therefore, a 1D freely propagating planar flame model is often used to

study the combustion characteristics of hydrogen-methane mixtures.

• Cantera includes a wide range of models for simulating the combustion of

gaseous fuels, including the 1D freely propagating planar flame model.

8
• Simulation and performance analysis of a GE Gas Turbine
Engine.

• Oil India Limited has a task of adding some % H2 in NG

with some restriction regarding the exhaust gas
Phase 2:
emissions.

• What is the amount of H2 and NG needed to be supplied

to the engine?

9
GE Combustion Chamber System
• This is a 10-chamber combustion system with reverse flow type.
• 2 types of fuel injection systems can be used here: single and dual fuel burners

10
• Consider a single chamber as a well
stirred reactor or a plug flow reactor.

11
• A well-stirred reactor (WSR) is a type of chemical reactor in which the contents
are well mixed and the reaction rate is assumed to be uniform throughout the
reactor.
• Perfect mixing is achieved inside the control volume.

12
Governing Equations
The governing equations for a WSR describe the evolution of the concentration
of each species in the reactor as a function of time.

1. Mass Conservation:

2. Species Conservation: The rate at which species k is generated through homogeneous phase
reactions is

The rate of change in the mass of each species is:

The implemented formulation of the energy equation depends on which reactor model is used.

Results

15
• All results are obtained at a standard condition of 300 K and 1 atm pressure

• Reaction mechanism file: GRI Mech 3.0: This mechanism contains 325 reactions and 53
species (including argon).

• Consider the stoichiometric reaction:

CH4 + 2O2 = CO2 + 2H2O

• Cantera’s Equilibrium Results are compared with the code written for simulation of WSR.

Steady State Mole Fraction of Species

17
Variation of temperature with equivalence ratio and oxidizer composition

Air without N2
• T = 300 K
P = 1 atm

• Results converging at 300K.

• Temperature is directly proportional to equivalence ratio

18
Variation of temperature with equivalence ratio and oxidizer composition

Air with N2
• T = 300 K
P = 1 atm

• Results not converging at 300K.

• As we keep adding N2 in air, we see less accurate results.

19
Steady State Mole Fraction of
Species using Plug Flow Reactor

• T = 600 K
P = 1 atm

• Results not converging at 300K. High initial

temperature is needed.
