DETAILED LESSON PLAN

I. Objectives

A. Content Standard
The learners demonstrate understanding of key concepts of random variables and
probability distributions

B. Performance Standard
The learner is able to apply appropriate random variable for a given real-life problem (such
as in decision making and games of chance).

C. Learning Competencies
1. The learner illustrates a random variable (discrete and continuous) (M11/12SP-IIIa-1)
2. Distinguishes between a discrete and continuous random variable. (M11/12SP-IIIa-2)

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to;
1. illustrate a random variable;
2. distinguish random variables as discrete or continuous; and
3. solve for the possible values of a random variable.

II. Content

A. Topic: Exploring Random Variables

B. Reference: ADM Quarter 3 – Module 1: lesson 1 pp 1-4, random variable-khan academy,
Statistics and Probability by Rene Belecina et al. pp 2-8.
C. Materials: Laptop, coins, activity sheets
D. Value Integration: the learners will able to apply their learnings in real-life situation.
E. Time Allotment: 50 minutes

III. Procedures

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY

A. Preliminary Activity (3 minutes)

1. Prayer

Before we start let us pray first.

Angelika, kindly lead the prayer Let us all stand and feel the presence of the
Lord.
Lord, God we thank you for this day. We thank
you for the opportunity to live and learn today.
As we go on in our daily routines please guide
us and protect us, we are sorry for our
shortcomings and mistakes, help us do the
things that pleases you. Lord, give us the
knowledge to understand the things that we
don’t, have courage to say the things that we
know and understand the difference of the
2. Greetings two, Amen.

Good morning, everyone!

-Good morning, Ma’am!
3. Checking of Attendance
-None, Ma’am! (everybody)
Is there any absent today?

Very good! I hope you can maintain

perfect attendance until the end of the
school year.

B. Review (5 minutes)

Class this is our first topic for this semester

under Statistics and Probability since we
don't have any previous lesson on this we will
first define Statistics and Probability.

What comes to your mind when you hear the

word Statistics? Ma’am survey.

Yes, Mia
Correct,

And when we conduct survey what are we

trying to get?
data or result ma’am.
Yes Luke,
Right!
When we conduct survey or poll to know the
pulse of the people we actually use statistics.
During your 10th grade you were able to
study statistics, anyone who can define the
word? Statistics is a collection of methods for planning
experiments, obtaining data, and then
analyzing, interpreting and drawing conclusions
based on the data ma’am.
Very good! if we want to know the total
number of students in favor of CAT we do
survey and that is Statistics. We do this to get
a reliable data to come with a reasonable
decision.

How about Probability?

Yes, Karen Ma’am, chance

Let’s define probability, yes louize!

Ma’am probability is a field of mathematics
that deals with chances.
That’s right, when we think of competitions,
games and opportunities we have random
outcomes and that is probability.

C. Motivation (5 minutes)

Let’s have a game of relay.

Direction:
Identify weather the given situation is
countable or measurable. Pass your answer
to the one next to you and the last man will
write it on the board, for this round the
winning group will have 3 points and 2 points
for the less fortunate group.

1. The number of voters favoring a

candidate
2. The number of accidents per year at an
intersection
3. The amount of paint utilized in a building
project
4. The number of siblings in a family in the
city Answer:
5. The amount of sugar in a cup of coffee. Countable Measurable
The number of The amount of paint
voters favoring a utilized in a building
candidate project
The number of The amount of sugar
accidents per year at in a cup of coffee
an intersection
The number of
siblings in a family in
the city
Remember that both countable and
measurable is a quantitative variable.

D. Discussion (25 minutes)

Let’s start our discussion with the two Discrete random variable and continuous
quantitative variables. random variable ma’am.
Kindly name them.

Very good!
Discrete random variable is said to be those
The number of flowers in the garden ma’am.
who are countable data.
Kindly give an example of countable data.

Yes Karen! The number of books in the library ma’am.

Correct! The number of flowers in the garden
is countable data.
What else?

Right! That is also a countable data.

While discrete random variable is the data Data that can be measured ma’am
that can be counted, what kind of data are
continuous random variable?
The amount of sugar in a cup of coffee ma’am
Yes Princess?
Right!
The weight of the student athlete’s ma’am
Kindly give me an example

Very good!
What else?
Right.

Remember class, that discrete random

variable has exact value while continuous
random variable takes on values from with
interval meaning the result is not exact and it
represents measured data.

(The teacher will discuss random variable

further.)
To further understand our topic let’s have
another round of our game. Each group will
have a representative on the board.
The first one to write their answer will win. Yes ma’am!
This time the winning team will get 5 points
and 3 points for the losing team.

Everybody, are you ready?

Direction:
Classify the following as discrete or
continuous.

1.X ={1head
0 tail

2. Y=exact mass of the random animal

selected at Manila Zoo

3.Y=year that a random student was born

Answer:
4.Z=the number of ants born tomorrow in 1.discrete
the universe. 2.continuous
3.discrete
5.X=the exact winning time for the 100m 4.discrete
dash men 2016 Olympics. 5.continuous

(the teacher will rationalize the answer)

E. Application (5 minutes)

For the last round of our game prepare 1

whole sheet of paper, re-arrange your chairs
in circle and do this activity. This time the
winning group will get 7 points and 5 points
for the losing group.

Direction:
random variable is assigned a letter. Once
grouped, cracked and form the “hidden
words” from the letters of each group.

(T) number of (H) numbers of

deaths due to channels in sky
pandemic cable
(O) weight of ₱100 (A) number of

the earth
(K) number of (N) number of

student’s bag household
(U) Volume of (Y) time needed to
diesel used in a trip solve a Rubrik’s

From the entries written in the table above,

try to fill out the table below.

Do you have any questions or clarifications?

IV. Generalization (3 minutes)

What do you think is the importance of

random variable in our lives?
Yes Marie!

Do you think it is important to know the

possible outcome of our actions?

Why do you think so?

Yes Luke!

Very well said!

I’m sure you truly understand our lesson.

V. Evaluation (5 minutes)

-Now, prepare ½ crosswise and answer the

following questions.

A. Classify the following Random

Variable as discrete or continuous.

1. The average distance that a runner

can reach in an hour
2. The time needed to finish the test
3. The number of baskets of apples
harvested
4. The length of the fence around each
housing unit
5. The weight of the student athletes

VI. Assignment (2 minutes)

Suppose 3 coins are tossed. Let Y be the

random variable representing the number of
tails that occur. Find the possible values of
random variable X and the sample space S.
