September 6, 2018 - The first General Assembly of Civil Engineering Students took place in

University Performing Arts Theater to the initiative of the Association of Civil Engineering Students
(UPHSL-ACES). The enrichment seminar theme was ADVANCED: Moving Towards Globally
Competitive Civil Engineers in the Philippines. It was attended by the Civil Engineering Faculty
members, Engr. Catherine Hernandez and Engr. Ida Mandawe. The first year, fourth year and fifth year
civil engineering students were all present in the said event. The guest speakers were Engr. John Mark
Villanueva, who was an alumni of UPHSL, and Engr. Edward Neill Landicho both working to Edland
Construction Company and the other one was Engr. Deo Grace Bardinas who was also an alumni of
UPHSL.

The enrichment seminar focused more on character building, molding and preparing the civil
engineering students to be more competitive as when they go to the industry world. Engr. Ida
Mandawe gave her opening remarks and also an inspirational talk wholeheartedly while Engr.
Catherine Hernandez discussed the sub-fields of the civil engineering program. Most of the speakers
shared their insights and experiences about the civil engineering program especially, Engr. Edward
Neill Bardinas and Engr. John Mark Villanueva, who were involved in numerous projects
around the Philippines. On the other hand, Engr. Deo Grace reiterated that the secrets to become a
successful engineer are determination and time management and also shared his story about his trials
and triumphs in his civil engineering journey and in his career at the same time. Erron Ignacio and
Robert Jesse Razon both are from fifth year engineering students testified about their experiences and
lessons they have learned throughout their civil engineering journey. The President of UPHSL-ACES,
Mark Jerald De Asis, gave his closing remarks. There were also fun games and trivia during the short
break with an exciting prizes they surely liked.

Indeed, this is one of the momentous events that civil engineering students will treasure for
lifetime. It was a long day for all yet a fruitful day.
