UNIT 1-BOOK 2.

1. EXPLORER
Someone who travels to places where no one has ever been in order to find out what is
there.
• Magellan was a famous 16th-century explorer.

2. FILMMAKER
Someone who is in charge of making a film.
• Designers work as filmmakers, creating a script for their design movie.

3. PHOTOGRAPHER
A person who takes photographs, either as a job or hobby
• She's a professional photographer.

4. JOURNALIST
A person who writes news stories or articles for a newspaper or magazine or broadcasts
them on radio or television.
• The journalist asked the minister how he viewed recent events.
5. STUDENT
A person who is learning at a college or university.
• a law/philosophy/medical student.

6. CONSERVATIONIST
Someone who works to protect the environment from the damaging effects of human
activity.
• Conservationists are fighting to save the tiger.

7. MUSLIM
A person who follows the religion of Islam.
• He is a strict Muslim.
8. AGRICULTURE
Farming.
• Agriculture is still largely based on traditional methods in some countries.

9. DOCTOR
A person with a medical degree whose job is to treat people who are ill or hurt.
• The doctor prescribed some medication.

10. TEACHER
Someone whose job is to teach in a school or college.
• The teacher drew a diagram showing how the blood flows through the heart.

11. GET UP
To stand up.
• The referee urged both players to get up.
12. BREAKFAST
A meal eaten in the morning as the first meal of the day.
• What do you want for breakfast?

13. START
To begin doing something.
• We'll be starting (the session) at six o'clock.

14. LUNCH
A meal that is eaten in the middle of the day.
• What's for lunch?
15. FINISH
To complete something or come to the end of an activity.
• I'll call you when I've finished my homework.

16. DINNER
The main meal of the day, usually the meal you eat in the evening but sometimes, in Britain,
the meal eaten in the middle of the day.
• We were just having (our) dinner.

17. GO TO BED
To get into bed.
• I’m sleepy – I think I’ll go to bed now.
18. WATCH
To look at something for a period of time, especially something that is changing or moving.
• I had dinner and watched TV for a couple of hours.

19. READING
The skill or activity of getting information from books.
• These books are compulsory/required reading for students of architecture.

20.WALKING
The activity of going for a walk, especially for pleasure.
• We're going walking in the park after work.

21. BOARD
A thin, flat piece of cut wood or other hard material, often used for a particular purpose.
• Cheeses were laid out on a board.

22. CLASSROOM
A room in a school or college where groups of students are taught.
• Students learning computer studies spend two days each week in a computer lab and four
days in the classroom.

23. PEN
A long, thin object used for writing or drawing with ink.
• She rummaged through all the drawers, looking for a pen.

24. BOOK
A written text that can be published in printed or electronic form.
• Have you read any good books recently?
25. COLLEGE
A university where you can study for an undergraduate (= first) degree.
• I met my husband when we were in college.

26.PENCIL
A long, thin object, usually made of wood, for writing or drawing, with a sharp black or
coloured point at one end.
• A box of coloured pencils.

27.CLASSMATE
Someone who is in the same class as you at school.

• Because of this conformist behaviour they were more or less ostracized socially by their
classmates.
28. NOTEBOOK
A book of plain paper or paper with lines, for writing on.
• I carry a notebook so that I can jot down any ideas.

29. SCHOOL
A place where children go to be educated.
• They're building a new school in the town.

30. UNIVERSITY
A place where people study for an undergraduate (=firts) or postgraduate (= higher level)
degree.
• Which university did you go to/were you at?
