Measurable Criteria

Communicating clear expectations of what the job will entail is crucial when hiring and

filling all roles at a school, but especially with non-administrative and non-instructional

leadership. Accountability and clear expectations will help applicants to clearly know what the

job will entail, and they can develop their capacity in the position. Several criteria should be part

of the hiring of these positions and should include a working knowledge of the area of the

position or an openness to enter training to get the support that they would need to excel. Time

would be the second criterion as a part of the hiring process, can the applicant be present at all

training and position work hours? Lastly, the applicant would need to share a passion for the

position along with the flexibility and creativity to excel in the job.

Protocol

Staying involved with the school culture and planning is an important part of the

accountability process for these new leaders. When a leader aspires to a role the principal cannot

simply step aside and hope the job will get done. Having the new leadership attend important

meetings, especially staff meetings, can keep them involved with the school's heartbeat.

Observing and staying connected with the new leadership can ensure they are fulfilling their role.

Strategies

As a school paper advisor, it was challenging to engage with coaches and other

stakeholders who worked on campus but did not have a campus email. Communication with

them concerning their sports team or other extracurricular activities was challenging. The student

editors were struggling to collaborate with them effectively. As an educational leader it is

important to encourage communication, promote team dynamics, and utilize certain strategies to

help keep the school's mission and vision at the forefront for every group and team on campus.
