1 Safety Instructions
1.1 Specific Factors
The centrifugal separator of this separation
system includes parts that rotate at high speed,
generate high centrifugal forces, and take a long
time to stop rotating.
Materials are carefully chosen and parts are
designed with extremely fine manufacturing

tolerances. Rotating parts are carefully bal-
anced to reduce vibration and wear and tear and
to withstand stress and fatigue.
The separation system is designed and supplied
for a specific function (type of liquid, rotational
speed, temperature, density, etc.) and must be
used for this function only, and strictly within
Alfa Laval´s specifications.
Incorrect operation or maintenance is likely to
result in an imbalance due to build up of
sediment, reduction of material strength, etc.
that could lead to serious injury or damage.
These compulsory safety instructions apply:

• Use the separation system only for the
purpose and within the limits specified by Alfa
Laval.
• Strictly follow the instructions for installation,
operation and maintenance.
• Ensure that personnel are fully trained and
competent in operation, maintenance and
emergency procedures.
• Use only Alfa Laval genuine spare parts and
the special tools supplied

this manual are not strictly followed, Alfa Laval
cannot be held responsible for any malfunction or
injuries resulting.

manual. Below are definitions of warning signs

1.3 Warnings in the Manual

The following is a compilation of the most
important warnings in the manual:

Disintegration hazards
Use the separator only for the purpose and within the
limits specified by Alfa Laval.
If excessive vibration occurs, stop separator with

emergency stop button to keep bowl filled with liquid
during rundown. Evacuate area immediately.
When power cables are connected, always check

direction of motor rotation. If incorrect, vital rotating
parts could unscrew.
Check that the gear ratio is correct for power

frequency used. If incorrect, subsequent overspeed
may result in a serious breakdown.
Welding or heating of parts that rotate can seriously

affect material strength.
Wear on the large lock ring thread must not exceed

safety limit. φ-mark on lock ring must not pass
opposite φ-mark by more than specified distance.
Inspect regularly for corrosion and erosion damage.

Inspect frequently if process liquid is corrosive or
erosive.
Assemble the separator carefully according to

instructions and tighten all connections properly.
Operating water shortage, or low operating water

pressure may result in sludge discharge failure and
cause heavy imbalance
Never discharge a vibrating separator. Vibration will

increase if solidified sludge is only partly
discharged.
If unusually strong vibration occurs, press the

Emergency Stop button and evacuate the area.
Failure to clean the separator bowl, including

operating system, at required intervals may cause
heavy imbalance.

Disintegration hazards
Do not enter the area after an emergency stop while
the separator is still rotating.
Do not start the separator after an alarm or

emergency stop without first remedying the cause of
the emergency and manually cleaning the bowl.
If the interval between sludge discharges is too long,

there is a risk of heavy side breakdown.
If the separator is not assembled and connected

properly, this may lead to disintegration

Entrapment hazards
Make sure that rotating parts have come to a
complete standstill before starting any dismantling
work.
To avoid accidental start, switch off and lock power

Assemble the machine completely before start. All

covers and guards must be in place.

Never reset an alarm without first finding and
remedying the cause.
Always observe the separator during start-up after

Irritation hazards
When filling chemicals, ask for and follow the
instructions from the chemical supplier. Personell
handling the chemical must be instructed in it’s use
(e.g. the possible risk for skin and eye irritation)
and always wear safety goggles, gloves, and
protective clothing as the liquid is alkaline and
irritating to skin and eyes. Never mix chemicals!

Alpacon® products
The Alpacon® products are not immediately
dangerous to health. However, as with all
chemicals, care must be taken when handling
the products. Please follow the instructions
below:

The Alpacon® product will cause irritation if it
comes in direct contact with eyes.
Rinse immediately with cold water for several
minutes. If symtoms persist, seek medical
attention.

comes in direct skin contact. Rinse well with cold
water.

If inhaled, the Alpacon® product will cause irritation
of the throat.

If swallowed in large amounts, the Alpacon®
product can cause kidney and/or liver damage.
Rinse mouth and drink water. Seek medical
attention.
