silvicultural practices and business concepts in
such a way as to best achieve a landowner’s
objectives.

implementing practices for the stewardship and use
of forests to meet specific environmental, economic,
social and cultural objectives.

It deals with the administrative,

economic, legal, social, technical and
scientific aspects of managing forests.

It may involve varying degrees of deliberate

human interventions, ranging from actions
aimed at safeguarding and maintaining forest
ecosystems and their functions, to those
favoring specific socially or economically
valuable species for the improved production

History of forest management are histories

of silviculture.

There is not a single history of forest

management, but rather many different
histories—conditioned by different
biophysical and socio cultural and economic
contexts in different localities.

and plants. The AgniPurana, written about 4000
years ago, stated that man should protect trees to
have material gains and religious blessings.
Around 2500 years ago, Gautama Buddha
preached that man should plant a tree every five

During the early part of the British rule, trees were
felled without any thought. Large numbers of trees
such as the Sal, Teak, and Sandalwood were cut for
export.
