Gender and Number of Nouns and Articles

In french, all nouns have gender.


A noun is a person, place, or The gender is either :
thing masculine (m) or feminine (f)
and singlular, or plural (pl)

The Definite Article: Les articles définis
We use definite articles to say ‘the’ and ‘a’ in
french
Ex.
Le chat est noir – The cat is black
La télé est grande – The TV is big
Les fleurs sont jolies – The flowers are pretty
L’histoire est intéressante – The story is
interesting
Definite Articles Before a Vowel or Silent h
• The definite article l’ is used before all singualr
nouns, both mascualine and feminine, starting
with a vowel or a silent h.

• The last letter of the definite article is dropped eg.


Le hôtel = L’hôtel
• When the noun begins with h, pronounce the
vowel that follows the h.
