The Study of Land Use Scenarios toward the Peak

Discharge and River Storage Capacity in the Krueng Seunagan Watershed,
Aceh Province. Master Thesis, The Postgraduate Program of Universitas Syiah
Kuala, under the supervision of Hairul Basri and Rusdi.

ABSTRACT

Watershed characteristics are vital to identify flood discharges. Also, a land use
becomes one of the factors in storing falling rainwater. By applying the rational
method analysis, the objective of this study is to examine land use scenarios
toward the peak discharge and river storage capacity. The data used were
watershed boundaries, land use, rainfall, Thematic Mapper (TM) of Landsat-8,
and digital images of ASTER-GDEM. The research was carried out in the
Watershed of Krueng Seunagan from February to August 2019. The results
retrieved in a branching level index of 3.066 showed that the watershed had
moderate increases and decreases of the flood water level. The river density index
of 0.53 was categorized into a ‘medium’ land density and it loaded large
sediments. Besides, the runoff coefficient which was 0.05048-0.07195 indicated
that the watershed was classified as ‘harmless’. Based on the calculation of peak
discharge and river storage capacity toward the watershed, there would be
flooding if the peak discharge exceeded 158,474 cubic meters per second. Thus, if
it is observed from the land use scenario and periods of increasing rainfall, it is
compulsory to anticipate flooding in the Watershed of Krueng Seunagan. It would
continuously have floods if the maximum rainfall occurred was in accordance
with the recurrence interval. Accordingly, in order to get a constant coefficient,
forest areas should be maintained in addition to hydrolytic integration by
improving the river cross section.
