ACTA DE LA PROCLAMACION DE LA INDEPENDENCIA DEL PUEBLO FILIPINO

A. What is the historical context of the document?
This document is the declaration of Independence read at the house of General
Emilio Aguinaldo, which was written by Ambrosio Ranzares Bautista. The reading of
this event followed by a succession of several other events on that day, such as the
waving of our national flag, was done to proclaim the Independence of the
Philippines. This happened in the afternoon of the 12th of June 1898. This significant
event in Philippine history occurred after Emilio Aguinaldo returned from Hong
Kong, with plans to end the reign of the Spaniards an believing that ye United States
is an ally.
Although Independence was declared, it was not achieved nor recognized. The
Treaty of Paris ceded the Spanish reign over the islands and handed over to the
United States. The Philippine-American War followed shortly after, and
consequently the Philippines is now under the American rule.
B. . What is the general revolutionary sentiment during that period of Philippine
history?
In general, of course the Filipinos are sick of being under the feet of the Spanish. In
the document, it is stated that the Filipinos are “tired” of all the oppression the
Spanish rulers were doing for more than 300 years. So, its safe to assume that
general revolutionary sentiment was that of anger and vengeance. Also a deep
desire for freedom, which was fueled by the unjust deaths of our many heroes such
as Jose Rizal.
3. How does the declaration of independence reflect the politics the times? Explain.
The politics of the whole country was a military government with the Spanish
Governor-general ruling at the top. The revolutionary government ad a similar
system. It was a Dictatorial government with General Emilio Aguinaldo being the
Supreme Head of the Nation. The document states this explicitly at the beginning.
By stating all the hardships and sacrifices the Philippines has gone through in the
hands of the oppressing colonizers, it reflects the desire for freedom and
independence as a republic, and justice for all the wrongs done.
