Aim

Chuck (engineering) A chuck is a specialized type of clamp

used to hold an object with radial symmetry, especially a
cylinder. In drills and mills it holds the rotating tool whereas in
lathes it holds the rotating workpiece. On a lathe the
chuck is mounted on the spindle which rotates within the
headstock.

What is a lathe chucks use for

A Lathe chuck is one of the most important devices in the

lathe machine it is used for holding and rotating a piece of
work while performing a lathe operation. The workpiece of
short length and large diameter of irregular shape which
cannot be conveniently mounted between centres are held
quickly and rigidly in a chuck.

Types of lathe m/c chucks

Three types of chucks in lathe m/c
1. Four jaws independent chuck:- The figure
Shows a four
jaw chuck diagram. The arrangement of four jaws
independent chuck, which has four jaws, located at an
angle of 90° to each other.

Here all the four jaws are opened independently. Four screws are
used in place of scroll disk, Hence it is called as four jaw
independent chuck.

Each jaw made of tough steel has three inner and one outer
gripping surface. The outer gripping surface is used for holding
larger sizes of the workpiece by reversing the jaw.
Concentric circles inscribed on the face of the chuck
facilitate quick centring of the workpiece. This type of chuck
is particularly used in the setting up of heavy and irregular
shaped articles. The diameter of the body specifies the size
of the chuck.

Advantage

I. Jaws can be reversed for holding externally or internally on

the workpiece.
II. A wide range of regular and irregular shaped job can be held
in the chuck.
III. Chuck possesses high gripping power; therefore heavy cuts
can be taken.
IV. There is loss in accuracy due to chuck wear out.
Limitations
I. It consumes more time for setting up a job in chuck
as compared to three-jaw chuck.
II. Chuck is heavy to handle on the lathe.
III. Because of high griping power of chuck, fine work
can be easily damged during Setting.

2 .Universal or Three Jaw Chuck :- A three-jaw chuck

Is shown the figure. This is the most commonly used types of
chuck in the lathe machine. The three jaws are generally made of
high-quality steel and are arrogated at an angle of 120° to each
other.
During the operation, the jaw teeth are made to
mesh with scrawl spiral teeth (Bevel teeth). The
meshing causes a moment of all three jaws
either towards or away from the chuck centre,
depending upon the direction of rotation of the
bevel pinion. The pinion is operated by square
end key called “chuck key”.
Advantage
I. The jod can de held easily. The jod is centered
automatically and quickly.

II. A wide range of round, hexagonal or regular shaped

workpiece can be held in the chuck.

III. Internal and external jaws are available

Disadvantages

I. Only regular components can be held

II. Accuracy decreases as chuck become worm.
III. Run out cannot be corrected.
IV. Gripping efficiency is low.
V. The chuck size is form 125 mm to 1200 mm large.
VI. Accuracy of concentricity is limited when work is
reversal in the chuck.
3. Magnetic Chuck :- The chuck is used for holding
a very thin workpiece made of magnetic material
which cannot be held in an ordinarily chuck. It is also
used where any distortion of the workpiece due to the
pressure of the jaws is undesirable
The holding power of the chuck is obtained by the
magnetic flux radiating either from the electromagnets or
from the permanent magnets introduced within the chuck.

In the ON position, the flux passes through the workpiece

and grips it. In OFF position the magnets are set aside
bringing them in contact with high permeable ” keepers”
which short-circuit the flux and prevent them from passing
through the workpiece. Consistent holding pressure and
clamping
Advantages of Magnetic chuck
Advantages
1.Independent from electrical power – no danger of dropping piece in a power failure
2.Ease of installation for transfer from one machine to another
3.No generation of heat, which could deform the pole plate or work-piece

Disadvantages

1.Chuck dimension is less adaptable and thus not suitable for big & heavy work-piece
Wear and tear on the internal moving parts and magnets will shorten the life of the
permanent chuck
2.Mechanical switching system inefficient for automated work
3.Cannot be used with components at a temperature above 80℃

Limitations

This can be used for heavy cuts.

The setting of work piece takes more time.
Due to high gripping power, fine work can easily get damaged.
This is heavy to handle on the lathe.
Difference between Three jaws and Four-
jaw chucks

 A three and four jaw chuck are exactly what their names say: a
chuck with three or four jaws to hold the work. The biggest
difference between them is the three jaw chuck usually moves all
three jaws with one adjustment, while on a four jaw, you usually
adjust each jaw with it’s own adjuster screw.
