THE TWO BROTHERS

Good morning to the honorable judges, teachers and my fellow friends.

Today I’m going to present you a story entitled “THE TWO BROTHERS”.

Long ago there lived a farmer named Pak Karim. One day, Pak Karim fell
ill. His illness became worse day by day. He knew he was going to die. So, he
called his son to his bed. The farmer had two sons. The eldest was sixteen
years old. His name was Daud. The other son was thirteen years old, and was
called Hashim. Daud was a clever boy but Hashim was quite slow.

The two sons came to their father and look sadly at him.

“Sons, the time has come for me to leave this world. I know I will die soon.

I want you to stay together always. Promise me”, said the farmer.

“We promise,”said the two sons.

“You must share the things I leave behind”said the father. “Alright
father,” said the boys. Two day later the farmer died. He left behind a house, a
cow and a coconut tree.

Daud said,”I will take the house and the cow. You take the coconut
tree”. Daud was selfish and greedy. He wanted more wealth.

Hashim said,” We can’t share like that. Father said we must share
equally.” Daud was surprised because he thought Hashim was stupid.

“Yes,yes, father said that” said Daud with a smile.”We can share the
house. But how are we going to share the cow?”he asked.
Hashim scratched his head. He could not find an answer. It was difficult
problem. Daud thought hard. Finally he had an idea to trick his brother.

“listen, Hashim. I know how to share the cow. You take the front and I
take the back part.” Said Daud.

“Alright,” said Hashim happily. “I have a good share. I have the cow’s
front legs. I have its eyes ,nose and ears too, Daud only has its legs and tail. I
am really lucky,”thought Hashim.

The next morning, they woke up early. Daud said,” Hashim, the cow’s
mouth belongs to you. Feed it with grass and leaves.” Hashim went out to cut
the grass. He also brought back some leaves. Daud stayed at home and rested.
Ha,ha,ha,ha..He laughed at his stupid brother.

Daud only came out in the evening. He milked the cow every day. He
took back a pail of milk. He never gave Hashim even a cup. Hashim did not
complain.

“I can’t complain. The back part of the cow belongs to Daud,” he told
himself. Pak Samad was their neighbour. He was a wise and kind man. Every
day he watched the two brothers.

“Daud is cheating Hashim. I must help Hashim,” he said to himself. One

day while Hashim was feeding the cow, Pak Samad went to see him. “You
always feed the cow. You get nothing. Your brother never feeds the cow but he
gets milk”.

Hashim smiled.” The back part of the cow is his. That’s why he gets milk.
Our father asked us to share the cow.” Pak Samad said,” You are not sharing
the cow now. Your brother gets a lot. You get nothing. Your father wanted you
to get the same share,”. Hashim realized he had been cheated. He was very
angry with his brother.

“I will give you an idea to teach your brother a lesson.” Said Pak Samad.
The next morning, while Daud was milking the cow, Hashim picked up a stick.
He beat the cow’s neck. The cow got angry and it kicked Daud. Daud could not
milk the cow.

“Stop beating the cow!” cried Daud. Hashim said, “The front of the cow
is mine. I can do whatever I want with it.” “I am not going to get any milk
today. Stop beating the cow!” cried Daud again.

“You want me to stop beating the cow? Promise me something” said

Hashim.

“What promise?” asked Daud. “You must give me half the milk. You must also
feed the cow,” said Hashim. Daud was surprised. “Hashim had become clever
suddenly. I don’t understand,” thought Daud.

“Alright, promise,” said Daud.

“I can’t cheat my brother. He is not stupid. He could have taken all the wealth.
But he didn’t. He is not selfish,” Daud said to himself.

From that day, Daud was not greedy anymore. He was also not selfish.
He lived happily with his brother.

So, my dear friends, we should always be grateful and should not be

greedy.
