Be cautious of provocative headlines. Typically, hoaxes are written using provocative sensational
headlines, such as pointing the finger at a particular party. The headings may also be taken from
official media news, only tweaked to generate the perception desired by the hoax author.
Afterwards, examine the website address carefully. For information obtained from websites or
including links, check the URL address of the site in question. News that comes from media sites
that have been verified by the Press Council will be easier to hold accountable. After reading a
news story, it is advisable to check the facts. Pay attention to where the news comes from and who
is the source? Pay attention to the balance of news sources. If only one source is available, the
reader cannot get the complete picture. Other things that should be recognised and observed are
the differentiation between factual news and opinion-based news.

Whereas facts are incidents that occurred with witnesses and circumstantial evidence, while
opinions are the thoughts and impressions of the news writer, and thus have a tendency to be
subjective. Check the genuineness and authenticity of the photos. In the age of digital technology,
it is important to recognise that merely the news content but also photographs and videos can be
manipulated. Counterfeit news creators sometimes edit photos to provoke readers. A way to check
the authenticity of a photo is by victimised the Google search engine, by dragging and dropping it
into the Google Images search field. The search results will present similar images found on the
internet so that they can be verified.
