Background

The Arcadia hotel Hanau is located in
the Rhein-Main metropolitan region, an
important hub of the German economy.
The City of Hanau is approximately 30
kilometres from Frankfurt/Main, one
of Europe‘s most important financial
centres. Hanau is also the birthplace of
the Brothers Grimm, the world-famous
story collectors. The Brothers Grimm
Monument, erected in 1896, stands in
front of the Neustädter Rathaus (Town
Hall) and the Grimm Museum is in the
immediate vicinity of the hotel. The
4-star hotel honours both the past and
the present: the modern business hotel
caters mainly to business clients while
combining high standards and its his-
torical roots. In the hotel the legacy of
the storytellers is reflected in the room
names – every guest is welcomed by
his “personal fairy tale“ in the Frog King
Suite or the Cinderella Room.
The hotel, part of the Arcadia Group,
has a total of 145 rooms, five Jun-
ior Suites and six modern conference
rooms. The building was constructed
in two phases, whereby the rooms in
the older part, (from 1982), were with-
out any form of air-conditioning until
the start of the project in early 2012.
The hotel is always striving to improve
its service to their guests and, with this
in mind, the decision was made to equip
these 105 rooms with air-conditioning as
part of a total refurbishment of the build-
ing in 2012.
Challenge
Rapid and simple installation of air-
conditioning system in 105 rooms
had to be done while the hotel
continued its normal operations
The key challenge of the project was to
install the devices rapidly and simply
as the hotel continued its normal op-
erations. A further requirement in this
context was to reconcile to the greatest
extent possible the interests of the own-
ers/principals and the hotel operators,
the Arcadia Group, from decision-mak-
ing to implementation. “The fundamen-
tal task was to air-condition 105 rooms
and integrate indoor units into the
rooms with as little structural work as
possible”, says Andreas Graf-Matzner,
LG Subsidiary Manager Frankfurt, the
Project Manager.
Solution
Multi V III was rapidly installed
floor-by-floor without much dis-
ruption in hotel’s daily operations
LG’s custom-made solution with Multi
V III and different indoor units asserted
itself distinctly in the bidding phase
against its competitors. To avoid hotel
operations being disrupted, the instal-
lation was made. This meant that a
maximum of only 21 rooms were not
available for guests in each phase of
construction. In all, a total of 800 me-
ters of pipe were re-laid on all the floors
during the project. The implementation
also took into account the capacity lim-
its of the 30 year-old power lines in the
building by integrating LG Soft Starter
Relays. The ensuing time-delayed
switching of the external devices pre-
cludes overloading the electrical wiring
in the hotel.
The 105 rooms were equipped with
air conditioners and the 5 suites with
ducts, which were concealed and in-
tegrated perfectly into the room. Ac-
cording to Andreas Graf-Matzner from
LG, Subsidiary Manager Frankfurt, “we
have achieved the objective to minimise
the costs and time needed.” Multi V III
connected with building management
system, are extremely user-friendly
since the rooms can be individually
controlled. A higher-level control sys-
tem for the hotel was designed and in-
tegrated for this purpose. Furthermore,
an AC-Smart Unit, a touch-controller,
enabled hotel staff to control individual
rooms centrally from the reception.
This provides high potential for sav-
ings, both in energy and costs, as the
cooling and heating capacity can be
lowered when the guest is away from
the hotel during the day.

“Air conditioning systems are basic re-
quirement for buildings nowadays, so
it was an important up-date which we
carried out as part of the hotel renova-
tion. We are looking forward to spring
season, a period when it was always
too cold for one guest or too warm for
another, but now we have rooms with
central heating and air-conditioning.
This will be a real advantage for us,”
as Markus Scheuenstuhl, Director of
Arcadia Hotel says, summarising the
benefits and new opportunities created
by LG air conditioning system.
“LG’s Multi V III is very energy-efficient
and very quiet, way ahead of the com-
petition. It was the perfect solution for
this building and everything that was
behind it,” says Marco Tschörner, LG

ing the solution, “with LG solution, the
operator saves about 20% energy in
day-to-day operations when compared
to offers from competitors. This can
be clearly seen in the hotel’s balance
sheet.” Another benefit of LG air con-
ditioners over rival products was con-
siderably quieter operational noise of
only 3 decibels, as well as the ease of
installation.
“We are delighted with the solution. It
was not necessary to make significant
changes for the building itself for the
installation of air conditioners, and they
work wonderfully,” sums up Markus
Scheuenstuhl. The excellent coop-
eration between LG and Zoubek, the
contractor, also allowed for a smooth
progress during the refurbishing with
ongoing hotel operations. Markus
Scheuenstuhl adds: “the result of this
cooperation was that not one guest
complained since. It was perfect.”

Design, the ‘look’ and fashion all find
‘centre stage’ in the GLOBANA Airport
Hotel Leipzig/Halle. This is the golden
thread running through the project,
from conception of the hotel, which
welcomes for example guests from
the textile and fashion sectors, to the
smallest details of the furnishings and
in the daily operations of the hotel.
Looking to attract the target group of
the GLOBANA Airport Fair & Confer-
ence Center, the events centre adja-
cent to the GLOBANA Airport Hotel, the
hotel is host to the numerous visitors
to fashion shows and the retail shops
there. The ‘look’ played an important
role in the design of the hotel, which
opened in 1997. It emulates the silhou-
ette of an airplane, thus harmonising
with its surroundings. The demands
made on the interior design of the only
4-star hotel at the Leipzig/Halle Airport
are correspondingly high and suited
to the needs of the business guests.

was needed, which would satisfy
high standards of the hotel in terms
of functionality and design
The client set very clear objectives,
whereby one essential factor in award-
ing the project was the design factor of
the new cooling units. “Based on our
demands – low noise levels, low en-
ergy consumption and state-of-the-art
design – we saw very quickly that LG
offered the ideal solution,” says Frank
Rößler, TGM GmbH, Product Imple-
mentation, describing the decision-
making process, adding: “The decisive
factor was, essentially, the design!”
Another important factor was that the
task was to be completed with as little
installation work as possible. The aim
was to avoid blocking floors where no

One important contribution to the smooth

staff training conducted in the LG Acad-
emy for the GLOBANA Airport Hotel Fa-
cility Management Team, as well as the
technical training given by LG during the
commissioning of the system. “Even be-
fore the first agreement, technical support
was the crucial factor for us: we wanted to
be able to make a technical assessment
of the products ourselves– as well as LG’s
ongoing technical support. Consequently
we had no reservations about using LG
products for the first time,” Frank Rößler,
TGM GmbH, Product Implementation.

The cooperation with LG satisfied all ex-
pectations of the GLOBANA Airport Ho-
tel, and the hotel puts it as: “everything
from one source.” “It is very gratifying to
cooperate with a major player like LG.
There will be many opportunities for fur-
ther cooperation in the future,” stresses
Frank Rößler, TGM GmbH, Product Im-
plementation. Meanwhile this coopera-
tion also extends to the GLOBANA Air-
port Fair & Conference Center with the
furnishing of the hotel with LG TV sets.
Plans are already in progress for another
joint project: in the future the client would
like to incorporate heat recovery in the
air conditioners, using LG’s heat pump

LG was involved in the installation
of air conditioning systems in four
separate buildings in the Area Ex-
Cesalpinia, located not far from the
city center of Bergamo, Italy. Cov-
ering 67,900m3, the site is part of
a large urban recovery project; the
land destined to be used for new
residential, commercial and tertiary
purposes
Headed up by the real estate arm of the
Percassi Group, the extensive Area Ex-
Cesalpinia project aims to reinvigorate an
abandoned industrial area, which is only
a short distance from Bergamo’s main
railway station and downtown area. For
its part in this major redevelopment initia-
tive, LG worked in collaboration with local
engineering company, Brescia2Progetti,
to design air conditioning systems for four
newly erected buildings.
The idea for this ambitious project origi-
nated from a desire to rethink and renew
a dilapidated part of Bergamo’s city-
scape, redefining its relationship with the
surrounding area. Once completed, it is
anticipated that the Area Ex-Cesalpinia
will increase the value of surrounding real
estate and breathe new life into the local
economy.
The cohesive design of the development
seamlessly blends nature with architec-
ture to create a calm, aesthetically-pleas-
ing environment. Plentiful green areas and
a sense of openness remove any hint of
the location’s former industrial decay. The
site’s total area of 67,900m3 has been split
three ways; 39,900m3 has been desig-
nated for residential dwellings (capable of
housing approximately 500 inhabitants),
13,000m3 for commercial purposes, and
15,000m3 for tertiary activities.
Eight newly designed structures have
been built for the redevelopment, includ-
ing a state-of-the-art, three level office fa-
cility. Located in the Area Ex-Cesalpinia’s
inner quadrant, this well conceived office
space can be easily adapted and repur-
posed for a variety of different business
needs. The building also features flowing
glass facades that have been designed
to enhance the comfort of those inside,
maximizing the amount of natural light
and indoor-outdoor flow.
LG and Brescia2Progetti installed air con-
ditioning systems in four separate sites
within the Area Ex-Cesalpinia. Most no-
table are the installations in buildings’ C
and D. These two buildings will be used
for a mixture of commercial and tertiary
purposes.
Challenge
Building C presented the greatest
challenge. All the external surfac-
es of the building are made en-
tirely from glass, with each face
subject to a different temperature
at any given point throughout the
day. These circumstances re-
quired the installation of a sys-
tem capable of zoned heating
and cooling. Brescia2Progetti set
about conducting an analysis of
heat dispersion and the effects of
weather conditions on the struc-
ture’s internal temperature in or-
der to ascertain the most appro-
priate solution
Though not featuring an all-glass ex-
terior, Building D presented the same
issue of temperature variation across
different zones. Brescia2Progetti con-
cluded that both sites needed a state of
the art conditioning system that could
simultaneously provide warm and cool
air, in addition to effective air treatment.
Solution
The solutions proposed by LG in-
cluded the Multi V III and the Multi
V Mini; products characterized by
installation flexibility and the abil-
ity to offer zoned comfort and
temperature regulation
“During the initial phase of the project, we
evaluated a number of leading air condi-
tioning brands. After completing our as-
sessment, we chose to go with LG. The
company’s unique products offered the
best blend of overall performance and
installation versatility,” said Dario Ferrari,
Technical Director of Brescia2Progetti.
“LG’s expertise and willingness to col-
laborate have played a fundamental role
in the success of this project; they were
instrumental in providing the information
necessary to help us design and imple-
ment an effective plan. The outstanding
price/performance ratio of LG’s products
was another important factor in our deci-
sion-making process.
“We were also impressed by LG’s experi-
ence in overcoming challenging installa-
tion issues – some which were quite simi-
lar in nature to those we were facing at the
Area Ex-Cesalpinia. In particular, there is a
glass office tower not far from this site, in
which LG successfully installed their sys-
tem air conditioning products,” continued
Mrs. Gabriella Moretti, Brescia2Progetti’s
Area Ex-Cesalpinia project leader.

proved themselves the ideal solutions.
By implementing LG’s Multi V III in build-
ing C, it was possible to install a direct
expansion heat recovery system, able to
simultaneously heat and cool different
zones. A direct expansion heat recovery
system enables energy to be recovered
from one zone for use in another, which
immensely increases AC output and re-
duces operational costs.
Meanwhile, Building D’s commercially
purposed ground-floor units required a
direct expansion heat pump system; the
Multi V Mini. Efficient and easy to install,
the compact Multi V Mini was the perfect
fit for the job.
The solution devised and implemented
by LG and Brescia2Progetti is character-
ized by superior flexibility. Building D’s
AC system is comprised of 105 internal
ceiling units (4-way cassettes) connected
to ‘collectors’ and H/R box distribution
units. This was done in order to ensure
maximum adaptability, meaning the sys-
tem can easily be modified or rearranged
in the future.
Completing the project, twenty enthalpy
heat exchanger systems (LG’s Eco V) were
installed to ensure indoor air quality. Fur-
thermore, the Eco V effectively creates a
significant reduction in energy consump-
tion. Allowing the independent regulation
of each zone, the AC EZ central manage-
ment system provides convenient control
and monitoring for up to 32 indoor units.
Altogether, the installed system ensures
a heat rating of 486 kW in cooling and of
548 kW in heating mode, with 18 exter-
nal machines positioned on the roofing of
each building.

new buildings at the Area Ex-Cesalpinia.

new R2 building is set to host a brand new
library and several lecture theaters.
The state-of-the-art Technology Depart-
ment Building is actually being loaned to
the university by a consortium, which is
comprised of Italian companies, other lo-
cal universities and the National Research
Council of Puglia. As such, the top-notch
research and educational facility will be
shared by the university and consortium
members; playing host to a number of dif-
ferent academic and commercial activities
at any one time.
Challenge
Having to design incredibly flexible
zoned air conditioning systems in
just 60 days proved a significant
challenge for all concerned
“Time factor was the key challenge we had
to face during the making of the project”,
says Mr. Giuseppe Mesiano, Engineer at

assignment at the end of May 2007 and we
managed to complete the projects con-
cerning EX-INALPLI, R1 and R2 by August.
In only 60 days, we completed the projects
by working on prototypes of the buildings”.
“The flexibility of the installation was an-
other key requirement to be fulfilled,” ex-
plains Mrs. Leda Bonfantini, the engineer in
charge of EX-INALPLI project. “In fact, the
project foresaw the possibility to indepen-
dently manage the temperature by different
users in different zones; therefore, any room
had to rely on a single apposite unit, requir-
ing a conditioning system that is modular
and flexible enough.
Availability to interior renovation was also
a key requirement by the University, which
needed a constant technical support and
professional referents to rely upon.
Solution
With the objective of combining
environmental comfort with energy
savings and maximum flexibility,
LG has proposed a mix of condi-
tioners and air treatment solutions
based on Multi V II and III systems
LG’s modular air conditioning systems are
comparatively easy to install and man-
age, while the company’s superior tech-
nologies endow its Multi V with incredible
zone temperature regulation capabilities.
Initially, the university’s engineers were
thinking of installing chiller system. After
further research, however, they decided
to install LG’s Multi V systems, largely due
to their greater simplicity, and installation
flexibility. The university engineers also
took into account the wealth of knowl-
edge, support and planning expertise of-
fered by LG’s personnel.
LG’s products are also more convenient
to install than chiller units as they require
less space for piping. “During the plan-
ning phase of the EX-INALPLI building
installation, we received proposals from
several suppliers,” said Mrs. Bonfan-
tini. “Ultimately, LG’s systems offered the
best performance. I was personally able
to verify that LG’s systems delivered the
best coefficient of performance out of all
the products we evaluated. Moreover, LG
offered invaluable technical assistance
during the installation and implementa-
tion phases, resulting in a remarkable re-
duction in the length of the project.”
Multi V perfectly fit the needs of the uni-
versity: an all-in-one system able to man-
age air conditioning, provide hygienically
fresh air and make a significant contri-
bution to overall energy savings. LG has
delivered a system that optimizes the
comfort of building occupants, reduces
energy and maintenance costs, and com-
bines maximum ease-of-use with opera-
tional flexibility.
In R1 building, LG’s Multi V II system,
employing four-way indoor cassette
units, were installed along with LG’s Eco
V products. For R2 building, it was nec-
essary to ensure that the volume of air
flow met with current legislation (on a
per-classroom basis), providing a total of
5 AHU 10,000 m3/h and 2 AHU 15,000
m3/h. LG’s solutions combine the effec-
tiveness of traditional air treatment sys-
tems with the flexibility of direct expan-
sion systems.
“Partnership between LG and SAMP
were outstanding,” notes Giovanna Car-
lettino from LG. “A local company, SAMP
specializes in air treatment units; thanks
to this partnership, we were able to offer
a superior technical solution that com-
bined air treatment and air conditioning
systems.”
The zone temperatures could be individu-
ally adjusted via VRF system while effec-
tive air exchange is ensured throughout
the building by the new treatment units.

Background
Bouygues decided to remodel its
new headquarters into a global ref-
erence for environmentally-sound
building
The industrial group Bouygues was es-
tablished in France in 1952. Now a global
presence, it maintains operations in 80
countries and employs more than 131,000
people. The Bouygues group is organized
into five entities: Bouygues Construction
(construction, energy and services), Bou-
ygues Immobilier (real estate), Colas (in-
frastructure), TF1 (media) and Bouygues
Telecom (telecommunications).
In 1988, after two years of construction,
the new headquarters for Bouygues Con-
struction officially opened for business.
Named Challenger, the complex became
a technological showcase for the late 20th
century. Twenty years later, Bouygues
wants Challenger to remain a modern
marvel, and the company has initiated a
very ambitious project to make it possible.
Up until now, an undertaking of this mag-
nitude has never been attempted on an
office complex; the audacity of the job is
simply staggering. For instance, one of
the myriad of high-reaching goals is to
reduce energy consumption on site not
by a factor of two or three, but rather an
eyebrow-raising factor of 10.
From a designer’s broad perspective, the
project has three interconnected guiding
principles: renovation, expansion and a
deep respect for the environment. Once
completed in 2014, Challenger will once
more garner recognition for being at the
forefront of comfort and modernity. More
importantly, however, it will also set a new
yardstick in terms of complying with the
most stringent environmental standards
on the planet. To do this, Bouygues is em-
ploying improved insulation techniques,
harnessing energy from solar and geo-
thermic sources and taking advantage of
the latest eco-friendly innovations.
Challenge
To match Bouygues’ objectives to
significantly reduce energy foot-
print, new air-conditioning system
had to be the most energy efficient
amongst those in the market
Since the redesign of Challenger’s energy-
usage paradigm is going to utilize photo-
voltaic and thermal panels, this implies that
it will also need geothermal technology for
the water loop. The site is equipped with a
heat pump on dry probes – fitted with 75
vertical sensors buried 100 meters deep
– and four temperature recording probes.
The system works by using the soil tem-
perature, which is collected by means of
a liquid flowing in a closed circuit. In addi-
tion to geothermal technology, the thermal
loop is fed by five adiabatic coolers that
use the air and water of the phyto-purifica-
tion station to cool the water loop.
This thermal loop, set up during the origi-
nal construction of the Challenger com-
plex in 1988, carries the heated or cooled
water through each building; the system
thus feeds the variable refrigerant flow
(VRF) air conditioners installed in each
building’s service rooms on each floor.
These devices work as heat pumps and
allow the ducted indoor units in the ceiling
to heat or cool each space individually.
Until now, the flow of water circulating in
the loop has been constant, not depend-
ing on the needs in terms of heating or
cooling.
According to Marc Sarniguet, Bouygues’
Energy and Services Deputy Manager
of Maintenance and Construction, “We
wanted to gain additional energy savings
by adapting a special valve on our system
with the aim of controlling the water flow
from the loop according to the real needs
of the building. The valve we have chosen
is particularly suitable for hydraulic appli-
cations in general, and more particularly,
the regulation of hydraulic circuits.”

In order to make it functional, it was nec-
essary to improve the flow of the loop.
Among the three potential partners who

by providing a variable water flow rate
control system, based on the use of the
Air Cooled VRF, coupled to a water flow
control accessory that manages the valve.
When competitors didn’t success in mak-
ing the flow rate vary between 50 and
100%, the LG solution optimized it and
offered a wider range between 35 and
100%. The result is a 71% in water sav-
ings compared to conventional control. In
addition, the LG Multi V is a 3 reversible
tube system capable of simultaneously
handling hot and cold temperature in
rooms where thermal needs are opposed,
such as a floor office with numerous walls.
This latter technique was especially ap-
pealing to Bouygues Construction.
This technology, developed by LG for
Bouygues Construction, is an interna-
tional premiere. The Korean company has
also been particularly proactive during this
project by bringing a Multi V Water Sync II
group on site and its engineers from Seoul
to conduct on-site testing.

LG’s solution has a few other notewor-
thy capabilities as well. For instance,
the system’s total coefficient of perfor-
mance (C OP) comes in at a very impres-
sive 5.4. In other words, it generates 5.4
times more energy than it consumes.
Speaking on the advantages of LG’s
technology, Jean-Charles Bertrand,
Bouygues Construction’s Communica-
tions Manager for the Challenger Reno-
vation, said, “It is a smart choice for Bou-
ygues. We’re convinced that the Multi V
group’s ‘three tube’ system and ultra-thin
19-centimeter-thick indoor units are the
right choice for us as we move forward.”
Installed in the ceiling, these LG units
are ideal for buildings that require in-
visible installations. Due to their ducts,
the air conditioning units can be eas-
ily installed in the appropriate rooms
without having to change any systems
already placed in the ceiling.
In addition to the technical capabilities
of the Multi V Water Sync II, the MULTI V
Water II has in its range a single mono-
bloc module of 63kW, whereas all other
competing models require two mod-
ules. This reduces the space required
for installation, as well as reducing pow-
er requirements. These are features that
will appeal to many market segments,
including construction companies, ar-
chitects and system installers.
