Challenge 4.

1
The disunity in the island of Mactan during the arrival of the Spaniards is
still evident with respect to the intrigues, controversies and bickerings in our
politics today. We always hear of the slogan, “Magkaisa na tayo.” In what areas
should we be united? In what areas should we be more discerning and
individualistic?

April 27, is Lapu Lapu Day, a special national holiday in honor of our country’s
first national hero. It was on this fateful day, 500 years ago, that Lapu Lapu and his
constituents repelled an invading force of Spaniards led by Ferdinand Magellan who
was killed in this historic event which became known as the Battle of Mactan.
The significance of the events that occurred can be observed today, where we
are again being treated as colony by another big power which seeks to dominate the
world. A new superpower is treating us with humiliation and contempt. China will not
listen to our complaints, rantings, and whimpering’s over the presence of vessels at our
territorial waters. As far as China is concerned, she owns the entire South China Sea.
Even though various information prove that the body of water is within our territory. The
protests of other countries, like our own, are futile. They are all sound and fury,
signifying silent anger and lament. Wherein the slogan “Magkaisa na tayo” shows the
importance of how our nations unity affect the governments stand and action towards
the issue.
Perhaps we should commemorate Lapu Lapu Day by pledging to ourselves to
defend our freedom and independence against any other country at any cost. But one
should be discerning and individualistic on how we approach such issues. Encouraging
critical thinking among Filipinos and opening room for discussions. Focusing on efficient
ways for the government to take action on the matter at hand. That will eventually lead
to a unified objective and plan that will benefit our nation.
