CHAPTER 1

1:0 INTRODUCTION

In this chapter we are going to talk about the major topics such like; Background
information, Statement of problem, Objectives, Hypothesis/Research Questions,
Significance of the study, Conceptual and Theoretical Framework and Scope.

1:1 BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Many of the tool box today are usually made in such a way that they have wheels and
handle that can be use to push or pull them around the workshop. These existing tool box
are very hard to push and pull during use in the workshop. During this process of pulling and
pushing, the user is getting much difficulties or even using more energy during the process
causing even injuries in the workshop during work. Pulling and pushing these existing tool
box causes tear and wear resulting into high cost in maintenance.

After realizing all these problems encountered with these old tool box, in this case
therefore, there is need to design a steering tool box. Moreover, the steering tool box is
simple to use hence it saves time during work when moving it around, they also more
efficient as compared to the steering less tool box. It also does not pollute the environment.

As compared to steering less tool box, the steering tool box is lighter as it being made with
light materials and have less parts connections. It has steering wheel which will be used to
change the direction, it also has the rack and pinion gear for the steering wheel’s rotational
motion conversion to linear motion and also for reduction of gears. It also has the tied rod.
1:2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Many of the workshop owners would like to cut the cost of buying, maintenance and
running of their tool box. The owner might be owning the tool box for commercial and
person use, it is so hard to use the steering less tool for this operations hence this is costly.

The workshop owners will be opting for another tool box which steering tool rather than the
steering less tool box is more heavy and has cost of maintenance. Using this steering tool
will help in making work easier while moving it around the workshop hence creating much
time in doing a particular work.

The goal of this project was to come up with a steering tool box that uses steering wheel to
move it around the work place. We focus on the improving and reducing the weight of the
tool box for easy use. By coming up with this project, the problems faced by many garages
and companies would have been solved.

1:3 OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this study project are as indicated below:

1.To minimize the energy used by engineers in carrying the tool box around while working in
the workshop.

2.To increase the productivity rate in the company where by the time which would have
been wasted in carrying the tool box is being used to do another job leading to high quality
service.

3.To reduce the chances of accident occurring while carrying the tool box as it not being
lifted by the hand there by ensuring engineer’s safety at all time in the industry.

4.To reduce the cost of repair and maintenance of tools in the workshop.
1:4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS /HYPOTHESIS

During the project there were research questions that were used to get more information
about this project in more details in relation to customers. They were as follows:

a) Why are companies facing failures in identifying the buying behavior of the
customers?
b) How do the companies assess the buying behavior of customers towards their
company tool box?
c) What is the buying behavior of consumers when they purchase tool box?
d) What type of impact does globalization process is shown on buying behavior of
kenyan automobile industry?
e) How to identify and analyze the buying behavior of customers and what type of
strategies should they follow in order to satisfy the buying preferences of
customers?

1:5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The finding of the study will be so useful in companies and garages all over the world by
contributing basic information on how to improve performance in practical subjects. There
is a need for tool box, easy to maintain and operate. The tool box should have less
pollutants released into the environment either solid, liquid or gases its idling and operation
time. The tool box should be safe to the user and to the people around it. It should also be
easy to use and also appealing to the user and satisfactory to their needs.

We therefore use our knowledge in engineering to provide some of the above needs. In this
project, we want to provide a creative solution and assists a person to cut on the cost of
buying, maintaining and operating a tool box. In this project, all kind of people shall benefit
from it including lower and high class.
1:6 CONCEPTUAL AND THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

A conceptual framework clarifies, explains and justifies methodological decisions . In

comparison to a theoretical framework, it may evolve as the research progresses. A
conceptual framework is more useful in trade project as it pprovide coherence for research
and also provides a scheme for selecting and prioritizing variables.
In this project mainly it is consisting of practical more than theory work hence most of the
work will be mostly done practically.it helps a student doing this course after learning
theoretical work and there after come to the field to do more of practical. Doing theory is
not just enough to be equipped with skills in a particular field, it is also necessary to do it in
practical way.
Therefore, this project will help build in practical field as it will be showing steps to follow in
making a steering tool box not just reading it in the book.

1:7 SCOPE

The research was carried out at Nairobi Technical Training Institute. The target group were a
group of the selected teachers and students from the institution. The aim of this project is
to create awareness for about the new model of tool box in automotive engineering. The
Digital Project Manager will provide complete website discovery, comprehensive user
experience creative redesign and development of the new tool box for easy access .If
there will be any problem concerning the project the team will help you out on it.

The project will develop a single format for the exchange of information that uniquely and
certainly identifies the automotive products, wherever authorised. Furthermore, the project
will adapt, adopt, or if necessary, develop a set of rules, and a format for the generation of
unique identifiers for automotive products that can be used for their worldwide
unambiguous identification

LITERATURE REVIEW

2:0 INTRODUCTION

In this chapter majorly we are going to discuss about the existing design/literature, critique
of existing design/literature, evaluation of proposed design, summary of gaps identified.

2:1 DISCUSSION OF EXISTING DESIGN/ LITERATURE.

A steering wheel tool box uses a Pinion gear and a steering to operate it, it also uses wheels
to move it around while working in the workshop. Tool box without steering was invented in
19th century. They were the mostly used tool box as they were big in size to accommodate
more tools. However, their slow, heavy and expensive in nature resulted into invention of
steering wheel tool box that is cheap, affordable, faster in movement and easy to operate
with there by taking over the old tool box. As people as developed interest in this tool box
made by steering.

The design of toolbox varies from product to product and industry to industry. Before the
design of a product can begin, the need for that product must be established. The main
source for design projects or development of a new product idea is market demand.
Without customer for the product, there is no way to recover the costs of design and
manufacture.

Thus, the most important part in understanding the design problem lies in assessing the
market which is establishing what customer wants in the product. Even though the resulting
ideas may be innovative and clever, they are useless unless they can be matched to a
market need or a new market can be developed for them. Additionally, a design project for
a new product or some feature of a product can be initiated by the desire to redesign it.
Redesign is fostered by market demand for a new model or the desire to include a new
technology in an existing product.

Redesign can also be initiated to fix a problem with an existing product, reduce product
cost, simplify manufacturing, and respond to a required change of materials or for many
reasons. Often the desire to change the product design is the need of the product to be less
expensive, to have new features or to last longer.

The steering tool box will be made with light materials to make it lighter so that it be easily
move around. In addition to this, this tool box will safeguard the tools and equipment stored
on it as it being locked and it is not easy to be entered by any other person. This new design
of tool box will have the following components;

COMPONENTS

1 Rack and Pinion

2 Steering system

3 Input shaft

4 Wheel

5 Steering wheel

1 Rack and pinion

It helps in Conversion of the steering wheel's rotational motion into the linear motion
needed for the vehicle's wheels to turn. Reduction of gears, which makes it easier for the
steering wheel to turn the wheels.

2. Steering system

Steering system helps in changing the position of the wheels.

3. Steering wheel

A steering wheel and the system it connects to primarily controls the direction of the tool
box. It converts rotational commands of the driver into swiveling movements of the tool
box’s front wheels.

The product was designed to satisfy various functional requirements such as security and
wear resistance, as well as non-functional requirements such as durability, portability and
the use of environmental friendly materials in fabrication. Other than these, there were
design requirements by JAG Corporation, which controlled the selling price, construction
tools and the construction process.

The customers were also looking for heavy duty toolboxes with hooks at their four edges, so
that they could be connected to the ute tray, making them more stable when driving, and
increasing safety of their tools and equipment.

This will make it easier for the user to locate, retrieve, place and store items which are used
on a regular basis. As for larger tools, the tools box has an easy access compartment at the
base, made possible by a sliding door. To maintain durability, the prototype will be
constructed out of steel as to prolong is lifetime use. The product will assist the
tradesperson in making good use of storage space in their vehicle or garage.

Surveys conducted on the potential customers indicated that the target market is about half
of the customers, who were dissatisfied with their current storage products due to their
locks, corrosion, water leakage and inability to carry heavy loads.

Out of the dissatisfied customers, most of them were especially keen to have their heavy
duty tools organized better for equipment in their vehicles. In addition to that, they
indicated their need for tool boxes that provided security from theft and weather, to avoid
delays during work, or replacements and repair costs.

HISTORY OF THE TOOL BOX

A toolbox, also known as a tool chest, varies with the craft of the owner. The purpose of the
toolbox is to organize, carry, and protect the owner's tools of trade.

TYPES OF TOOL BOX

Modem toolboxes are predominantly metal or plastic. Wooden boxes built today are
primarily intended for children's toolsets, although some wooden boxes are homebuilt
creations of their owners. Many wooden toolboxes were created in the early 1800's but
were discontinued in the last 20 years. A modem carpenters' toolbox is composed of a base,
a pivotally-mounted top cover, and usually a rack-mounted inside for convenient access.
The generic toolbox is usually red. Many toolbox and chests from a variety of trades can be
seen at the Smithsonian Museum of American History. A common modem design comprises
a rectangular box with a hinged cover on top, a handle for carrying, and one or more latches
securing the lid to the box. Smaller boxes may be open inside, but larger ones will often
have a removable tote tray sifting on a flange inside the lip of the box, with a larger
compartment below. A second popular design, commonly labeled a tool chest, uses slide
out drawers in lieu of the voluminous open space of the prior design. It is less common for
these toolboxes to have the tote tray, although usually they still have a storage
compartment above the

drawers. Tool chests are primarily made of metal though some expensive models are made
of hardwoods. Often they are sold as a set of a rolling bottom cabinet with a second, smaller
chest on the top.

Toolboxes can be mainly divided as 5 types, they are:

1) Plastic

2) Steel

3) Aluminium

4) Waterproof

5) Cantilever
