William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon and had a wife by the name of
Anne Hathaway. He was an accomplished playwright and actor. His plays are
performed all around the world. Shakespeare spent much of his working life with a
company of actors at the Globe theatre in London. During his time, all classes of people
loved watching plays and Shakespeare seemed to be very popular with them. As a
result, he was able to retire and return to his hometown. Quite comfortably off.
Shakespeare wrote thirty-seven plays. Some are not often performed. The famous ones
may be classified into groups. These are the historical plays like 'Julius Caesar' and
'Henry V'; the comedies like 'As you like it' and 'Twelfth Night' and the tragedies like
'Hamlet', 'Macbeth' and 'King Lear'. There are other plays which could not be put into
these classes. They form another group. These are plays like 'Romeo and Juliet' and
'The Merchant of Venice'. Shakespeare also wrote several beautiful long poems. These
poems appeared to be addressed to a certain person but nobody knew who that was.
