Background & Context

Case study:
Natural Disaster
--Isaac

Rain and Wind Storm:

In this Case Study the Scenario I have considered Rain & Wind Storm for natural disaster:
The Rain and the Wind Storm happened in the District of Tumkur where I am a college
student.
I learned about the storm that was headed in the way of the tumkur district and in this
scenario.
We have come to know that furious storm by the weather department of India
and has predicted a rainfall of 10mm per minute with moderate wind which is categorized
under the heavy rain.
But also they have given the time by which the storm would have passed in particular areas
given the college opens at 10 AM considering the time that storm passes which is given and
solve the situation and
The options include like cancelling todays classes or Starting late or at the same timings
I have implemented the various aspects of the computational thinking
(Problem identification, Decomposition, Pattern Matching, Abstraction) in order to solve the
problem that is a way to attend the college classes in this particular time of crisis of
Transportation.
In this Scenarios I have considered the various iterations below :
Decomposition

problems?
Iteration 1-PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION AND DECOMPOSITION
To come up with a decision i should know
* How much of rain is expected
Problem Identification * When is the Rain storm going to pass by
and wheather going to relax

Problem Identification

I am a college student in Tumkur,

On the basis of the previous Rain Storms
i just learned that there is major rain storm the colleges Have either cancelled classes
headed in the direction of Tumkur. or delayed the College's start time or
if there is too much of rain and wind I they going to start the college as usual,
here i should choose between one of the
cannot travel to the college by my bike three outcomes
so what actions should I take in order to
prepare myself for the rain storm?

Graphic Organizer
Decomposition (How would you break down your problem into sub- problems?)
Now as we know from the reports that rural roads
Iteration 3 would not be clear for transportation
Before the start of the college's classes
but the sub problems still need to be solved are
* Do students of the college come from the rural area
roads?
Problem Identification * Can buses drive through 10mm of rain and moderate
wind??

College's Classes usually starts at 10 am, Pattern Recognition (Are there related solutions to draw on?)
Here A major Rain storm is going to hit the rural
part of the Tumkur. Local news channel ammogha are

moderate wind . According
to weather reports given by the Indian weather
Authorities major transportation roads will be
Cleared of water dumps by 11am. But the rural
Roads of Tumkur however won’t be cleared till 2pm
Abstraction (How would you abstract this problem?)
so the time when the college classes starts ?
should they declare it a holiday or delay the start of the
classes or should the college classes start as usual?

Decomposition (How would you break down your problem into sub- problems?)

Iteration 4 Abstraction in addition to the rain and wind .

i also consider the fact that there might be some water
Problem Identification huddles in the road since that will be a major problem
for the buses.

Having some information about the water on the roads

is important.

i should also take into account when the water will be
cleared and roads are possible for transportation of the
buses
Project justification:
The computational thinking process in graphic organizer above

Problem Identification:
For the initial iteration 1 and 2 I questioned about what needs to be done for
Prevention? And for the 3rd and 4th iterations I researched more about the problem and regarded about the possible outcomes
that could be done by me
That is to skip my classes for the day or going after sometime checking upon the weather or go the classes at the correct time
with the given conditions
These were the possible outcomes for the iteration 1 pattern recognition Phase.
Decomposition:
While decomposing the problem we identified the sub problems in order to
Overcome the given larger problem in iteration 2 we decomposed the main problem to solve to 2 or more sub problems in
iteration 3 i identified another
Important of a sub problem it is providing a more of a clear way to group
Those questions for being able to solve the problem on the bigger picture.

Pattern Recognition:
Pattern Recognition is one of the main thing i did in iteration 1 it allowed me to recognize the patterns of the 3 potential
outcomes that was either
Cancel the classes completely for the day or to delay the going time to the
Classes or to go to the classes at the same usual time given the conditions
of the potential problem that is being faced. Helping in deciding the
Suitable outcome.
Abstraction:
The abstraction has been used in the phases of 3 and 4,
That is in iteration 3 what time will it stop raining is recognized as an
Important variable by the abstraction in the iteration 4 the abstraction as recognizes water on the roads as an important variable
to be considered .These are really helpful because it gives information about the problem in
Hand that needs to be handled while ignoring sum unnecessary or less
Relevant information and solely focus on solving the problem.
Algorithm Depiction :

The Above Algorithm depiction design model shows the Rainfall during a storm that has been studied and
analyzed for the purpose of visualization and Computational thinking to help solve the problem during the time
of crisis.
