DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE
GRADE 11 PHYSICS-PRACTICAL ASSESSIGNMENT #2
Unit 11.5: Electricity Principle
X
Topic 11.5.2: Electric Circuit TOTAL MARKS OBTAINABLE
20 Marks
Outcomes: 11.5.2, Parallel and Series Circuits

Topic: Identify the difference between Parallel and Series in electric circuit

Task background information:

The parallel and series circuits are the two main types of electricity connection. They both perform
in different ways, in terms of current, voltage, résistance and other electrical components in
household. In a series circuit, all components are connected end-to-end to form a single path for
current flow, whereas parallel circuit, all components are connected across each other with exactly
two electrically common nodes with the same voltage across each component.

The two samples of different circuits are given below to differentiate the flow of current, resistance and
voltages also it will help you to understand the difference between parallel and series circuits.

1: Parallel Circuit 2: Series Circuit

Instruction:
In this assessment, students are encouraged to group into five (5) and discuss the difference between
series circuits and parallel circuits, using circuits containing the most basic of components (resistors
and batteries) to show the difference between the two configurations. Students will then explore
what happens in series and parallel circuits when you combine different types of components, such
as bulb and inductors. Every student in a group SHOULD participate to award full marks.

Steps/Methods: You are require to follow the steps/methods given below.

 Use the circuit diagram to set up and connect the circuit for two resistors in series R1=R2
 Switch on and record the readings of the ammeter and the voltmeter.
 Calculate the total resistance of the series circuit.
 Set up the circuit for two resistors in parallel.
 Switch on and record the readings of the ammeter and the voltmeter.
 Calculate the total resistance of the parallel circuit.
 What conclusions can you make about the effect of adding resistors
