3 Abstract

 Diabetic wounds are one of the most common health problems worldwide, enhancing the demand for
new management strategies. Nanotechnology, as a developing subject in diabetic wound healing, is
proving to be a promising and effective tool in treatment and care.
4 Introduction
 Chronic wound - 1-2 weeks - Infection
 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) - metabolic disease
 the skin of diabetic patients
 A bacterial infection =
recovery/inflammatory response = Healing
 Massive investment / time
 4 sequential phases are involved in the
mechanism underlying wound healing.

8 Lipid-based nanosystems - Nanoemulsions

 NEs have a similar composition to the conventional emulsions, displaying an oily,

aqueous, and surfactant composition.
 NEs have been described as a suitable choice to improve the activity of insulin and
antioxidant agents, decrease inflammation, glycaemia, and wound exudate.

9 Vesicular systems-Liposomes

 Classified as vesicles, liposomes present a mainly phospholipidic composition,

whose primary role is to support a hydrophobic tail and a hydrophilic head
 liposomes offer an excellent approach for lipophilic drug delivery, nucleic acids,
GFs, and active ingredients. When compared with systemic delivery, they exhibit
fewer toxicological issues and decreased drug loss.

 NLCs enable the transepidermal water loss (TEWL) reduction

 Through encapsulation and incorporation of drugs, such as antibacterial agents,
GFs, or even bioactive agents, NLCs are currently a good option to manage the
treatment and care of chronic wounds recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF)

 Another promising treatment for diabetic wounds lies in the delivery of drug
formulations, as phenytoin and LL37 based NLCs. The application of phenytoin
prompted successful wound healing, due to its activity against bacteria and the
glucocorticoid antagonism effect, promoting the deposition of collagen and
reducing exudate from lesions

13 Polymer-based nanoparticles
 electrospun nanofibers extremely helpful (They possess great porosity, small
pore size, large surface area, and the ability to reproduce the ECM features and
behavior and offer a suitable approach to wound dressing, due to their antimicrobial
activity, good absorption of exudates, oxygen permeability )

27 Conclusion

o Nanotechnology is a promising system in clinical dermatology.

o Metal-Based nanosystems can promote the destruction of the bacterial wall membrane
and induce microbial DNA damage.
o Future research should focus on non-irritant systems capable of assuring a good
adherence to the injured site.
o Hydrogels, which are very common therapeutic and cosmetic dosage form used in wound
repair, also face inherent challenges to their use.
o More studies have to be performed to achieve representative conditions.
o To obtain realistic results in humans more clinical trials are necessary.
