Did you ever wonder how to model a football in SolidWorks? Well, in today’s lesson we will show you how to
model an artistic football with debossed orange surfaces in 3D.

Open a New Part with model units set to millimeters

Go to: File > New > Part pentagon

Save the File with the following name: Football.SLDPRT

Create a 2D Sketch on the Top Plane

Select the Top Plane from the Features tree and click on the sketch icon

Go to: Tools > Sketch Entities > Polygon

Draw a polygon with 5 sides concentric to the origin This is called a pentagon.

Assign a vertical relation to one side

Go to: Tools > Dimensions > Smart

Click on the vertical side and assign a length of 50mm, as shown in the image below

Go to: Tools > Sketch Entities > Polygon

Draw a construction pentagon concentric to the origin

Assign a vertical relation to one side

Go to: Tools > Dimensions > Smart

Click on the vertical line and assign a length 100mm, as shown in the image below

Click on the Close sketch icon  to close the sketch.

Create a 2D sketch on the Front Plane

Select the Front Plane from the feature tree and click on the sketch icon

Go to: Tools > Sketch Entities > Centerline

Draw a vertical line and a diagonal construction line coincident with the corners of the pentagons as shown in
the image below

Go to: Tools > Dimensions > Smart

Click on the diagonal construction line and assign a length of 50mm

Click on Close sketch  to close the sketch area.

Create a Reference Plane

Go to:  Insert > Reference Geometry > Plane…

Click on both of the two construction lines

The selected lines are highlighted in Pink and Purple, as shown in the image below

Click OK to complete the operation.

Create a 2D Sketch on Plane1

Select Plane1 from the feature tree and click on the sketch icon

Click on the Normal To icon

Go to: Tools > Sketch Entities > Polygon

Draw a random polygon with 6 sides instead of 5 sides. This is called a hexagon.

Hold the CTRL key, select the corner of the hexagon and Point1

Then add a coincident relation between them

Hold down the CTRL key, select the next corner of the hexagon and the Point2

Then assign a coincident relation between them, as shown in the image below

Click on the Close sketch icon   to close the sketch area.

Create a Reference Axis

Go to:  Insert > Reference Geometry > Axis…

Select the Point and Face/ Plane option from the property manager

Click on the center point of the pentagon and select the Top Plane

An axis gets highlighted in yellow, as shown in the image below:

Create a second Reference Axis

Go to:  Insert > Reference Geometry > Axis…

Select Point and Face/ Plane option from the property manager

Click on the center point of the hexagon and select the Plane1

An axis gets highlighted in yellow, as shown in the image below:

Create a Reference Point

Go to: Insert > Reference Geometry > Point…

Select the Intersection option from the property manager

Click on Axis1 and Axis2 to create an intersection point (Point1)

The intersection point gets highlighted in purple, as shown in the image below

Click OK to complete the operation.

Create a second Reference Point

Go to: Insert > Reference Geometry > Point…

Select the Intersection option from the property manager

Click on Axis1 and Axis2 to create the intersection point (Point2)

The intersection point gets highlighted in purple, as shown in the image below

Make a Loft

Go to: Insert > Boss/Base > Loft…

Select Sketch1 and Point1 from the feature tree

The selected profiles  will create a conical prismatic geometry, as shown in the image below

Make a Loft

Go to: Insert > Boss/Base > Loft…

Select Sketch2 and Point2 from the feature tree

The selected profiles  will create a conical prismatic geometry in the modeling area

Go to the Property manager > Options

Uncheck the Merge Results check box, as shown in the image below

Click OK to complete the operation.

Create a 2D Sketch on the Front Plane

Select the Front Plane from the Features tree and click on the sketch icon

Go to: Tools > Sketch Entities > Center Point Arc

Draw a quarter circle concentric to Point1 (or Point 2)

Go to: Tools > Dimensions > Smart

Click on the arc and assign a radius of 100mm, as shown in the image below

Go to: Tools > Sketch Entities > Offset Entities

Select the quarter arc and assign an outward offset of 10mm, as shown in the image below
Click OK to complete the operation.

Create a Revolve

Go to: Insert > Surface > Revolve… or click directly on Revolved Surface

Go to the property manager and select Axis1 as the Axis of revolution

Scroll down in the property manager and click on the Selected Contours box

to the modeling area and select both arcs as shown in the image below

Use the Cut with Surface Tool

Go to: Insert > Cut > With Surface…

Select the upper highlighted surface from the modeling area, as shown in the image below

Go to the property manager and click on the flip direction  icon to switch the cut direction

Leave the other options as default

Click OK to complete the operation.

Use the Cut with Surface Tool

Go to: Insert > Cut > With Surface…

Select the inner highlighted surface from the modeling area, as shown in the image below

Make a Shell

Go to: Insert > Features > Shell

Go to the property manager and assign a shell thickness of 4mm

Go back to the modeling area and select the upper face of the Pentagonal solid body

The selected face gets highlighted in Blue, as shown in the image below

Make a Shell

Go to: Insert > Features > Shell

Go to the property manager and assign a shell thickness of 4mm

Go back to the modeling area and select the upper face of the Hexagonal solid body

Th selected face gets highlighted in Blue, as shown in the image below

Use the Fillet

Go to: Insert > Features > Fillet/Round

Select the five inner edges of the pentagonal body, as shown in the image below

Go to the property manager and assign the Fillet radius  of 2mm

Make another Fillet

Go to: Insert > Features > Fillet/Round

Select the six inner edges of the hexagonal body, as shown in the image below

Go to the property manager and assign the Fillet radius  of 2mm

Make another Fillet

Go to: Insert > Features > Fillet/Round

Select an inside planer face of the pentagonal body

The selected face gets highlighted in blue, as shown in the image below

Go to the property manager and assign the Fillet radius  of 2mm

Make another Fillet

Go to: Insert > Features > Fillet/Round

Similarly, select a planer face of the Hexagonal body

The selected face gets highlighted in blue, as shown in the image below

Go to the property manager and assign a Fillet radius  of 2mm

Create a Circular Pattern

Go to: Insert > Pattern/Mirror > Circular Pattern

Select Axis1 as a Reference direction

Assign the Number of instances 5 with equal spacing set to 360 degrees

Scroll down in the property manager, select Bodies 

Go back to the modeling area and select the hexagonal solid body, as shown in the image below

Use the Move/ Copy Body Tool

Go to: Insert > Features > Move/ Copy…

Select a pentagonal and a hexagonal solid body from the modeling area

Go to the property manager and enable the Copy option box and assign the No. of Copies 1 

The selected bodies are highlighted in blue as shown in the image below

Go down in the property manager and click on the Rotate  box

Go to the modeling area and select Axis2 as a reference axis

Assign a rotation value of 120 degrees in the box

Click OK to complete the operation.

Create a Circular Pattern

Go to: Insert > Pattern/Mirror > Circular Pattern

Select Axis1 as a Reference direction

Assign the Number of instances 5 with equal spacing set to 360 degrees

Go down in the property manager, select the Bodies option

Go back to the modelling area and select the copied bodies of the pentagonal and the hexagonal solid body
The selected bodies are highlighted in blue as shown in the image below

Use the Combine feature:

Go to: Insert > Features > Combine

Select the 16 solid bodies from the modeling area

Go to the property manager and click on Add

Use the Move/ Copy Body Tool

Go to: Insert > Features > Move/ Copy…

Select the existing combined body from the modelling area

Go to the property manager and click on the Rotate  box

Go to modeling area and select Point1 or Point2 as rotation reference

Assign rotation values around the X, Y and Z Axis

X= 0 degrees,  Y= 0 degrees, and  Z= 180 degrees

Leave the other values as default

Use the Combine feature:

Go to: Insert > Features > Combine

Select both combined bodies from the modeling area

Go to the property manage and click on Add

Create a 2D Sketch on the Front Plane

Select the Front Plane from the Feature tree and click on the sketch icon

Go to: Tools > Sketch Entities > Center Point Arc

Draw a semi-circle concentric to Point1 (or Point 2)

Go to: Tools > Sketch Entities > Center line

Draw a vertical center line to close the half circle as shown in the image below

Go to: Tools > Dimensions > Smart

Select the construction line and assign a length of 212.50mm

Click on the Close sketch icon  to close the sketch area.

Create a Surface Revolve

Go to: Insert > Surface > Revolve… or click directly on Revolved Surface

Go to the property manager and select Axis1 as the Axis of revolution

Use the Split Feature

Go to: Insert > Molds > Split…

Go to the Property manager > Trim Tools

Select Surface Revolve2 from the features tree

Go down in the Property manager > Target Bodies

Go to the modelling area and select the combined body (Combine2)

Go back to the Target Bodies option and click on Cut bodies to split it

Go down in the Property manager > Resulting Bodies

Select both files from the dialog box, as shown in the image below

Change the Appearance

Go to: PhotoView 360 > Edit Appearance…

Go to the property manager and right click on the Selected Geometry dialog box

Click on the Clear Selections from the pop-up options to clear the dialog box

Click on the Select Bodies icon

Go to the modelling area and select the inner body Split[1]

Go to: Appearances (color) > Plastic > High Gloss > White High Gloss Plastic

Go back to the property manager and select orange from the color pallet, as shown in the image below

Click OK to apply the appearance.

Go to: PhotoView 360 > Edit Appearance…

Go to the property manager and right click on the Selected Geometry dialog box

Click on the Clear Selections from the pop up options

Click on the Select Bodies icon

Go to the modelling area and select the outer body Split[2]

Go to: Appearances (color) > Metal > Steel > Brushed Steel

Double click on the Brushed Steel icon to select and apply the appearance

Select Shaded , Shadows In Shaded Mode  , and Ambient Occlusion  (If possible)
