Mackenzie’s First exploration

1. Alexander Mackenzie was the first man to travel across the continent of North America all
the way from the east coast to the west coast. He had set out to find a sea route, which
would link the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific. The route was to be called the Northern
Passage.

2. Having been brought up in the remote northernmost part of Scotland’s Western Isle.
Mackenzie had experienced the hardships, which can caused by extreme cold. He added to
this experience by working as a young man for the Hudson’s Bay Company in North America.
Mackenzie worked for several years at the company’s lonely trading outpost on the shores pf
lake Athabasca, where he learned everything he could from the older fur trappers about the
cold and hostile wilderness.

3. On 3rd June 1789, he set out on his first journey of exploration. He was then 34 years old.
With him, he took a team of five trappers in one large birch-bark canoe with sails, and in
another five Indians, Including one who acted as a guide and as an interpreter. Driving his
team hard, Mackenzie travelled 58 kilometers on the first day and 130 km on the second.
Soon they reached the Great Slave Lake, which, even at this time of year, was covered with
broken ice. The canoes were in constant danger of being crashed. They sailed towards the
west looking for an exit from the lake.

4. Eventually, they found a river, which now bears Mackenzie’s name. The current was
strong and, with a good wind behind them, they raised the sails on their canoes and travelled
480 km along the river towards the west. Then, suddenly, they saw the Rocky Mountains in
front of them, and the river went north.

5. Still optimistic of reaching the Pacific, Mackenzie continued to follow the river, in spite of
being told by the Indians they met along the banks that it would properly take lifetime to reach
its source. He soon realised, when he took his bearings, that he had come so far north that
they were only one degree from the Arctic Circle. The river they were following would not end
in the Pacific but in the Arctic Ocean. Nevertheless, he urged the team on and in time
reached the northern ocean.

6. Winter was now approaching so it was essential to turn back to avoid it. Mackenzie and his
men reached home three months after the start of their journey. They had covered 4,800 km
but they had not reached the Pacific. Mackenzie returned to Britain to get ready for the next
journey.

Reading 1: ( 10 Marks )
Read the following text (blog) and answer the questions:

Turn Off TV Week

Bob Martin: The annual Turn off TV Week starts today. The idea is to live without TV for a
whole week. The people who organise it say that television is a bad thing. Personally, I’m not
sure that they’re right. First of all, the organisers say that the kids of today are lazier and in
worse physical condition than kids of the past because they spend all their time in front of the
TV. But a recent study of 10,000 US children aged 10 to 15 found no connection between
TV and physical fitness. Children who don’t watch TV don’t always do more physical activity.
And even the world’s biggest TV addict can find an hour in the day to do exercise. In my
case, soaps always make me want to turn off the TV and go down to the gym!
I agree that there are lots of terrible programmes on TV. But I don’t agree with saying ‘No
TV’. I just think we need some more intelligent programmes. TV can be informative, funny
and moving. And, yes, it can be awful too. The most important thing is to think about what we
watch and be selective. Another thing is that TV affects our communication with others. An
American Professor found that parents in homes with no TV have an hour of conversation
with their children every day. In other homes, there was only 38 minutes of conversation … a
week! That’s bad. But TV can also bring people together and help to start conversation. Is
there a better way to begin a conversation than by chatting about the latest episode of your
favourite series.? Turn off my TV? Ok. But I also plan to continue turning it on when there’s
something good on.

Jane W: I agree. You can’t say that all TV is bad. It’s as stupid as saying that all books are
good, or that all pop music is bad. Maybe a lot of TV is bad. But the idea is to look for the
good programmes. I always read the TV guide and decide what I’m interested in watching. I
watch my favourite programmes and I also try some new programmes too. I watch them and
then I switch the TV off.

JoPike: I agree there are some good programmes on TV. But we all know that the most
popular programmes are awful. Unreal reality shows, boring football matches, stupid soaps.
That’s why Turn off week exists, and that’s why I like it. It tells people that there are more
important things in life than knowing what’s happening on Big Brother.
