1 LEARNING OUTCOMES (LO)

CLO 2: Perform installation for workstation and domain server using MS Windows server
or Open Source server operating system.

2 OBJECTIVE

Upon completion the lab session, students should be able to:

1. Backup a computer hard disk partition using 3rd party utility.

2. Restore a computer hard disk partition using the backup image.
3. Perform backup and restore using Windows default software.
4. Perform backup and restore using a third-party software.

3 THEORY

Making changes to your operating system can spell disaster. It is very important to make a
backup of your important files/data in case something goes wrong. There several ways to backup
your system. Backup can be made by either

1. Backup only the important files/data and/or the system files.

2. Backup the whole hard disk or partition for easy recovery but very time consuming.

The media use for backup is also important. The choice of media depends on the backup job.
Capacity, price, speed, reliability, ease of use and storing are some of the factor need to be
consider before choosing a media for backup. Optical disk, hard disk and magnetic tape are
some options that available.

4 EQUIPMENT / TOOLS

1. Computer running Windows 10

2. VMware Virtual Machine running Window 7.
3. Backup and partition utility (Hiren’s BootCD 15.2).

5 ACTIVITY 4A: PREPARING FOR HARD DISK BACKUP

THEORY

One of the easiest and fastest ways to recover from a system disaster is to do a backup of the
system inside its own hard disk. Every system will have their own specific backup and hence
each individual configuration and setting. But in order to do this a considerable hard disk space is
needed. For easy restore the backup need to be in another partition.

In this activity we will separate the hard disk into two partitions without damaging the installed OS
and application using a third-party utility.

2
PROCEDURE

Reminder : All activities during this lab session must be recorded using Active Presenter
and each steps should be inserted into your lab report using printscreen.
Using VMware player, install Windows 7 in a virtual machine. Set the virtual machine to
1 4 GB memory and the hard disk space to 40GB.

Turn on the virtual machine and insert the utility CD ISO (Hiren’s BootCD) into the
2 virtual machine optical drive (using VMware menu)

At the virtual machine boot screen, press they ESC key and choose to boot from the
optical drive (CD-ROM, DVD or Blue Ray). You may also enter the virtual machine bios
3
setup by pressing F2 and set the boot priority to the optical drive.

At menu utility menu select Dos Programs.

4

Select no 1 "partition tools….".

5

Select no 1 "Gparted…..".
6

Choose "live with default setting".

7

Press enter again

8

Run "Partition Editor".

9

Follow the instruction to divide the virtual machine hard disk into two partitions. Set the
10 partition (primary) to 20GB.

Finish step 10. Restart the virtual machine and let it load windows.
11

In window open "Disk management" and create and format the second partition using
fat32 and set the drive as "D". Change the "D" drive volume name to DataDisk and "C"
12
drive to "OperatingSystem".

ACTIVITY 4B: MAIN PARTITION BACKUP

THEORY
Keeping a backup of the system partition enable fast recovery from any problem related to the
operating system compare to installing the OS from scratch. The system will be up and running
with all of the application installed and ready to use.

A partition backup file usually is very big and can only be kept in another hard disk. In order to
store the partition backup in removable media such as an optical drive or a USB drive, the
backup files must be separated into multiple small files.

3
PROCEDURE

Reminder : All activities during this lab session must be recorded using Active Presenter
and each steps should be inserted into your lab report using printscreen.
1 Turn on the virtual machine in 4A and insert the utility CD ISO into the virtual machine
optical drive.
2 Boot the virtual machine to the optical drive (Activity 4A – Step3)
3 Select Mini XP and wait until the system boot into Windows 7 from the CD.
4 Inside windows run HBCD menu.
5 Select Programs->Backup->DriveImage XML
6 Choose backup. Select C drive and Click next.
7 A new window (Backup window) will appears. Now click next ( in the backup window)
8 Change the directory to the second partition you have create in activity 4A (DataDisk) as
shown in Figure 4.1

Figure 4.1: Control Panel Windows 7

9 Unselect Split large files option and set Compression set to fast.
10 Click next and wait for the backup process to finish. Close the application
11 Redo step 4 to 10 but in step 9 make sure the Split large files option is ticked.
Change file name to Drive_C2

ACTIVITY 4C: RESTORING PARTITION USING BACKUP FILE

PROCEDURE
Reminder : All activities during this lab session must be recorded using Active Presenter
and each steps should be inserted into your lab report using printscreen.

1 Turn on the virtual machine and insert the utility CD ISO into the virtual machine optical
drive.

4
2 At the boot screen press ESC and choose to boot from the optical drive. (You may also
enter bios setup by pressing F2 and set the boot priority to the optical drive).

3 Select Mini XP and wait until the system boot into Windows 7 from the CD.

4 Inside windows run HBCD menu.

5 Select Programs->Partition/Boot/MBR->Partition Wizard home Edition

12 Choose Restore. Select the partition to be restored and click next as shown in
Figure 4.2

Figure 4.2: Hiren’s Interface

13 Type the location of the backup file or browse for it by clicking the small folder button.

5
14 Click next. In the next screen make sure you select the correct partition to restore. Click
Next twice. Follow the instruction in the red box that appear and press ok.

15 Wait until finish. Close the program. Open My Computer and check the content of the
restored partition. Restart the computer.

ACTIVITY 4D: WINDOWS DEFAULT BACKUP AND RESTORE UTILITY

THEORY

Windows 7 comes with its own utility for backup and restores purpose. The backup process can
be done manually (Advance Mode) or using the wizard to help with the process.

PROCEDURE

Reminder : All activities during this lab session must be recorded using Active Presenter
and each steps should be inserted into your lab report using printscreen.
1 Turn on the virtual machine and wait until window is loaded.

2 Click start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Backup to open to backup and

restore utility.
3 Enter the advance mode of the utility. Choose the Welcome tab. Name the 3 advance
services available from this utility and also briefly describe their function.
(Write your answer in Question 2)
4 Choose the first wizard. Click Next. How many options are given for the first wizard?
Name them. (Write your answer in Question 3)
5 Now choose the third wizard. What extra device is required to perform this operation?
(write your answer in Question 4)
