1. Students roll the big die, then move the
designated number of spaces, between
one and six.
2. Moving: Once they land on a space, they
have to answer the designated questions
by the space.
3. Ladders: If the space a student lands on
is at the bottom of a ladder, they should
climb the ladder, which brings them to
space higher on the board.
4. Bonus: There are bonuses space where
students can receive candy, free chips,

Let’s read the selection below. The student will read the story.

SAILING IN BALANGAYS
The Philippines has a rich history of
seafaring. The first wooden boat discovered
in South East Asia is the balangay. It is
believed that the first Filipino families and
communities travel in these boats to find
lands for settlement. They were also used for
cargo and trading merchandise across
different islands.

To navigate the balangay, the seafarers catch

the wind to move using sails. The sails come
in different shapes and sizes, and the most
common for small wooden boats are triangle-
shaped since those are easy to set up and do
not take a lot of space and preparation. Some
of them also use multiple sails to balance the
amount of wind to speed up or slow down the
boat. One of the common features of these
sails is they are cut in similar forms of right

C. Discussing new The readings presented to you will lead us to our
concepts and lesson today, Right Triangle Similarity Theorem.
practicing new skills
#1 Altitude- the perpendicular drawn from the
vertex of the triangle to the opposite side
Hypotenuse: the longest side of a right triangle,
opposite the right angle.

What is the Right Triangle Similarity Theorem?

If the altitude of a right triangle is drawn
to the hypotenuse, then the two triangles
formed are similar with each other and to
the original right triangle.

• What are the legs of the Δ𝑋𝑌𝑍? ̅̅̅̅

𝑋𝑌 and ̅̅̅̅
𝑌𝑍
• What is the hypotenuse of the Δ𝑋𝑌𝑍? ̅̅̅̅
𝑋𝑍
• What is the altitude of the Δ𝑋𝑌𝑍? ̅̅̅̅̅
𝑌𝑊
So, let Δ𝑋𝑌𝑍 be a right triangle where ∠𝑋𝑌𝑍 the right
angle, and 𝑌𝑊 is an altitude to the hypotenuse 𝑋𝑍̅.

We can say that ∠𝑋 and ∠𝑍 are complementary. Now,

splitting the right triangle into two, we form new
angles ∠𝑋𝑌𝑊 and ∠𝑊𝑌𝑍 which are
complements of ∠𝑋 and ∠𝑍 respectively. With
these conditions, we can say that ∠𝑋≅∠𝑊𝑌𝑍 and
∠𝑍≅∠𝑋𝑌𝑊, also ∠𝑋𝑊𝑌≅∠𝑌𝑊𝑍 because they
are right angles. Hence, all corresponding angles
are congruent.

Therefore 𝚫𝑿𝒀𝒁∼𝚫𝑿𝑾𝒀∼𝚫𝒀𝑾𝒁.

the corresponding angles are congruent.

D. Discussing new Let us apply and prove the right triangle similarity
concepts and theorem in considering the illustration of the parts
practicing new skills of a right triangular sail.
#2

▪ What do you call the height of the sail? Luff

▪ What do you call the base of the sail? Foot
▪ What do we call the Leech of the sail? Hypotenuse
▪ Where is the tack of the sail? At the vertex of the right angle.

If the luff is 12 ft. long and the foot measures 9

ft., how far is the tack from the leech. Remember
that the shortest distance from the vertex of the
right angle to the hypotenuse is an altitude of the
right triangle. Hence, we have three similar
triangles, Δ𝑇𝐿𝐶, Δ𝐻𝐿𝑇, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 Δ𝐻𝑇𝐶, and are
shown separately below.
