Lesson Plan – 04/12/23

Science 5th Grade – The Cell Cycle

 Standard: 5.L3U1.9 - Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about patterns

between the offspring of plants, and the offspring of animals (including humans);
construct an explanation of how genetic information is passed from one generation to
the next

 Objective: SWBAT accurately explain the events that occur during the Cell Cycle using
the correct vocabulary.

 Materials Needed:
o Cell Cycle Image
o Student Text
o Exit Ticket
o Worksheet to Record Information
o Smartboard
o Cells Booklet
o 6 Plastic Bags
o 30 Balloons

 Summary of Lesson: The students will be exploring the Cell Cycle and how cells come to
be. They will be learning about each stage, what happens in that stage, and how they
work together to develop new cells. They will also be drawing what they are learning
about the Cycle.

 Academic Language:
o Hypothesis o Chromosomes
o Cell Cycle o Nucleus
o Interphase o Prophase
o Mitosis o Metaphase
o Cell Membrane o Anaphase
o Cytokinesis o Telophase
o DNA o Cytoplasm
o Organelles o Cell Wall
Plan:

 The teacher will begin by asking students to share what they know about the Cell Cycle
in their table groups while passing out the materials (balloons, bags, worksheet) for the
introduction activity. Students will then share whole group.
 The teacher will then have the students read the questions and begin formulating a
strategy and writing their hypothesis. The teacher will review vocabulary as well.
 Students will then complete the activity in their groups while recording their findings on
their worksheets. They will be given 5 minutes to complete this activity.
 After the 5 minutes, students will share with the whole group their results, what they
learned, and a few other discussion questions.
 The teacher will then direct students to follow along as students take turns reading from
the Student Text. While reading, the teacher will ask questions to promote discussion
and have students recall and define vocabulary words. The students will also be
recording vocabulary words in their Cell’s book.
 Throughout the reading, the teacher will pause the reading and use the image on the
Smartboard to help students further understand the content. In addition, the teacher
will make connections to the students’ lives.
 After all reading is done, the teacher will walk through a set of hand motions that
students can use to remember the parts of the Cell Cycle. While showing hand motions,
the teacher will review the parts of the Cycle and what occurs during that stage by
having students recall their learning.
 Students will then complete the exit ticket with questions about the Cell Cycle. In
addition, they will draw the Cell Cycle in their Cell books.

Assessment:
 Throughout the lesson, the teacher will informally consider students’ responses to
assess their learning.
 In addition, the students will complete an exit ticket formally demonstrating their
understanding of the Cell Cycle and the content from the day.
