III. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES

Day 1: Mean, Median, and Mode of Ungrouped Data
March 13, 2023
A. Introduction

Ask the studentsthe following questions:

1. Have you ever experienced to compute the average of your grades for you wanted to
comapre it with your other classmates’ hot did you compute it?
2. Have you ever experience to check the papes of your clasmates in a test and organize
them by lowest to highest?
3. Do you know that in these everyday experiences at school, we always encounter the
mean, median and mode? Why do you say so?

The teacher will connect the lesson and share the objectives of the day.

Objectives:
At the end of the period, the students are expected to:
 define mean, median, and mode;
 solve problems involving mean, median, mode of ungrouped data;
 manifest critical thinking in answering mean, median and mode of ungrouped data .

B. Interaction
II. Interaction

1. The teacher now will be discussing the mean, median and mode.

 MEAN
- The mean is the most commonly used measure of central tendency. When we speak
of average, we always refer to the mean.
- It is the sum of all items or terms divided by the total number of items or terms.
Σx
x̄=
N
Where:
x̄=the mean
Σx=the ∑ of the scores
N=thetotal number of the scores

Examples 1.

Ten students got the following grade in Mathematics 10: 83, 70, 95, 90, 88, 96,
90, 90, 75 and 85. Find the mean.

Solution:
Grades: 83, 70, 95, 90, 88, 96, 90, 90, 75, 85
N: N = 10

83+70+95+ 90+88+ 96+90+ 90+75+85

x̄=
10

862
x̄=
10
x̄=86.2
Examples 2.

The ages of five contestants in Statistic Quiz Bee are the following: 18, 17, 18,
19, and 18. Find their average age.

Solution:
Ages: 18, 17, 18, 19, 18
N: N = 5

18+17+18+19+18
x̄=
5

90
x̄=

x̄=18
 MEDIAN
- The median is the midpoint of the data array. Before finding this value, the data must
be arranged in order, from least to greatest or vice versa. The median will either be a
specific value or will fall between two values.

Median of the Ungrouped Date

Step 1: Arrange the data in ascending or descending order.
Step 2: If n is odd number,
x̄=1 , 2, 3 , 4 ,5
Step 3: If n is even number
x̄=1 , 2, 3 , 4 ,5,6
3+4
x̄=
2
7
x̄= =3.5
2
Examples 3.

There are 9 students in a classroom with ages 18, 19, 21, 21, 18, 20, 17, 22, and
23. Determine the median.

Solution:
Arrange the data in ascending or descending order:

17, 18, 18, 19, 20, 21, 21, 22, 23

x̄=20

The median is the fifth observation which 20.

Here we can tell that there are 4 students younger than 20 and 4 students older than 20.

Examples 4.

Eight books were randomly selected, and the numbers of pages were recorded
as follows: 415, 398, 402, 400, 420, 407, 407, and 425. Find the median.

Solution:
Arrange the data in ascending or descending order:

398, 400, 402, 407, 415, 415, 420, 425

407+ 415
x̄=
2

x̄=411
 MODE
The mode is the measure or value which occurs most frequently in a set of data.
Note to get the modes you need to arrange the following scores in descending to
ascending order or vice versa.
Types of mode:
1. Unimodal- the data has a one mode
2. Bimodal- from the word bi means two. Thus, there are two modes in the data
3. Multimodal- means that there are more than 2 mores in a data.
Examples:
1. 3,2,1,5,1
1,1,2,3,5
Mode: 1 it is unimodal
2. 7, 6,6,8,9,8
6,6,7,8,8,9
Mode: 6 and 8 meaning it is bimodal
3. 11,8,9,10,10,8,9
8,8,9,9,10,10,11
Mode: 10, 9, and 8 meaning it is multimodal.
4. 5,4,6,8,3
3,4,5,6,8
Mode: No Mode
Activity:
1. The grades of 20 high school students in Mathematics are
75,78,79,80,83,84,85,86,87,88,89,90,90, 91, 92, 93, 94 ,94, 95. Find the mean, median,
mode?
2. The mean of a set of 40 numbers is 25. Find the sum of 40 numbers?
3. The average IQ of 10 students in Mathematics subject is 114. If 9 of the students have
IQs of 101, 125, 118, 128, 106, 115, 100 118, and 108. What must be the other IQ
result?

IV. INTEGRATION
